ASI, ALT and static yearly calibration/Checks

Postby KFA » Wed Mar 04, 2015 9:41 pm

Hi guys and gals. CAA warned me a week or so ago that they will be grounding aircraft that do not comply with Part 24 and 44 maintenance rules regarding the ASI and ALT checks. Well this has started today, so be warned. You will not be allowed to continue in a flight school or fly into controlled airport without a special flight permit and then only once for maintenance. They give you 30 days to comply and then they permanently ground your plane. The law requires that your ASI and ALT be checked on an annual basis and signed out in your logbook. We have all been slack about this although it has been in Part 24 since the beginning. So, to avoid being grounded, make sure your AP does the checks prescribed on your airspeed, altimeter and your pitot static system.

See the following material as reference
AC 43.13-1B Par 12-1 Page 12-1 (and 12-2) CHAPTER 12. AIRCRAFT AVIONICS SYSTEMS

Thanks,

Which maintenance organisations are capable or able to do this?

Every AP is supposed to be able to do it. We can also do it at Kitplanes. I am just very busy so only by prior arrangement and only starting from next week. If there is no work to be done on the system then it should take about an hour but if we have to find leaks then it will be charged by the hour.

Hi Stefan,

vir interessantheid, wat presies moet getoets word, watse toets instrumente het mens nodig en hoe word dit gedoen? Ook, moet dit in die airframe logbook aangebring word en in watter formaat?

Groete

Is this only for flight schools and controlled airspace?

If we are staying out of controlled airspace are we still required to have the systems checked?

Yes, it's not just for flight schools but all aircraft (NTCA included). We share the same airspace as the other guys. This has always been a requirement. Go to part 44 CATS and see the annual inspection checklist in appendix A.

I have not seen any formal notifications yet, except for letters direct to specific owners? I assume we do not have to worry until (a) the CAA contacts us, or (b) our next ATF renewal?

Or is there a formal AIC/AD in progress?

Hi Justin,
There is no need for CAA to issue anything. It is already written in the law. They do not need to give you a grace period or anything. In the case of TAF, all they did was apply the law. So in technical terms, if you have not complied with these regulations your aircraft is actually not deemed airworthy. Very few of us have ever done these checks and they need to be done.

Stefan,

Ek wil net seker maak... Dis vir almal en nie net skool en opleidingsvliegtuie nie?

Indien wel, wie in die kaap omgewing is bevoeg om dit te doen?

Don't want to kick the bees nest here but decided to inquire from my AMO buddy regarding his testing.

Someone who services serious aircraft, he says he doesn't do it, simply because should he buy the US 5000 $ FAA certified vacuum equipment with obvious method of testing , the CAA requires from him to convince the inspector's interpretation that his method of testing will comply before being granted certification i.e. still a grey area which he rather refers to the instrument service providers.

Hope the AP's can clarify this before committing to expensive lay out and still have to overcome hurdles.

Seems like the rabbit hole goes deeper... What I dont understand is that, although being a reg for a very long time, why are there so little APs that did the tests? I think it would be surprising as to the percentage of NTCA aircraft that does not comply...
