Rewiring of Strobe/L Light- Need Cable.

Morning all,

DBP wiring to the Landing light and strobe is slowly perishing in places. I have a feeling that a lot of this was due to the accident last year. I would like to replace it before we run the risk of a short. What type of cable should I get and where can I get it in Pretoria? Diameter needed etc etc.?

If at all possible I would like to know if there is a supplier of two core silicon cable (Black). I like silicon cable because it is softer and more durable. It is mainly used on power tools because of its ability to flex and not twist up. I do know its expensive but I would like to go this route if there are no safety risks or restrictions? I have an orange 3 core extention cable made of this that was given to me 10 years ago...works everyday in dust and sun and it not even remotely worn out yet!

Any AP's or clued up persons that can advise? To do the light, strobe and extra for a future fuel pump I will need not more that about 9 m in length.

They purpose make the twin core from two single core cables and then coat/heat-shrink the covering on.

These guys were recommended to me by CN Lighting (http://www.cnlighting.co.za), who make strobes and who get their supplies from them.

If you would like I will bring a sample through for you on Saturday.

You can get shielded Tefzel wire from Jaycor http://www.jaycor.co.za. They are in Eastgate in Sandton. Tefzel is what most certified aircraft are wired with. For a strobe light, you should use shielded wire and earth the shield at the power supply end only to prevent radio interference.
Don’t know what current you are drawing, but 16AWG should be ok for about 3amps in longish cables. The wire can take much more than that, but you get a higher voltage drop.
You can get single core silicone wire from most cable suppliers – it is used to wire stoves in houses but it has thick insulation and it’s heavy. I think you can get shielded silicone twin core from Jaycor as well.

Try my hangar number 11a at springs. I am wiring up the Navion, and have a plethora of Cale, and if I don't have the spec you need, ill trot over to Norman and get the required cable you need.

Just bring coffee or beer, depending on what time you arrive. Beer pref in the morning and coffee in the eve... ## ##
