PS also contacted Paul Lintott (Zulu1 from Airmagic) and this is what he reckons - he knows he's stuff:

Hiya Ant, the stone guard is made for the Airborne XT series, especially the 912, it prevents stones and grit from entering the oil cooler and radiator under the keel. The Aquilla 912 uses them. These are of no use to a standard Aquilla machine.

Ant, i have flown the entire Kalahari and also the Augrabies national park and the Orange river with a Aquilla 582, landed at a spot called nienepunt, with a real gravel strip, i trashed the nickel leading edges of a warp drive, then flew the machine through Mozambique, landed on hundreds of beaches and at 600 hrs simply had it refurbished..nothing you can do. My last prop at 300 hrs was pretty ugly also as i used for testing AM products, the leading edge on a NC came loose. So its something we have to live with I am afraid..But if a solution is available, i will be the first to let you know.

Long before the 912's they were being used on Airborne trikes
They certainly do help with stones being thrown up by the front wheel.
I use A mud flap on the front wheel as well and leave a clearance of about 70mm

I don't have a distributor in South Africa, I generally just mail things across as required. Registered international post would cost AU$25 for a stoneguard. The pattern I made for an Aquilla trike has windlas written on it. I made it a fair while ago so I assume this might be the model of Aquilla trike? We had a South African come to Australia and bring his Trike with him as well as another person importing one, I think. This was about 10 years ago and I haven't seen many since. The size of my pattern is 1470 mm between the axles and has a depth of 330 mm from the base tube to the line intersecting the axles. It was also designed to have bungee along the bottom edge to allow for movement of the suspension. The photo you have from my website is for the Airborne classic trike which has wires between the axles hence the grommets to attach the stoneguard to the wires.
As for needing CAA approval in South Africa, I wouldn't know. We don't need approval here but the rules may not be the same. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Hiya Len. Happy new year mate..only flown a XT912, never seen another one..

I suppose it would work, but the damage i had was on the back of the prop and sand blasts the blade horribly. But with CEW, dave J and Nemo flew from the south coast and a nickel tip came off in flight. After I cam from the Kalahari. They landed and removed the balance on the other two blades and flew back to Ballito. I had a transponder back then. But I suppose it may work? Be worth a try but adding weight is not good and it mmay also increase parasitic drag.. Oil cooler protection etc makes sense. Aiden used a small mesh guard on a 912 Aquilla..

I am now onto my 5th Airborne XT912 and have used stone guards on all.
It definately works.
I have not noticed any extra drag at all.
My latest XT912 has the new Arrow wing.
Climbs out at 900ft ASL at 1500ft min and cruises at 60Kts @3800 RPM.

Yes you can, depending on condition. Stainless leading edges and balancing.

I made up a rubber guard on the front mudguard, and flew with that for about ten years. No problems.
