Re: ZU-DVE (and ZS-WUO) Flight Log

I am in Aurora at the moment so cannot do the usual log of my flips. todat I flew to Strandfontein, north of Lamberts Bay, and had a wonderful 15mph tailwind. On the way back I tried high and low, and had to settle for a low headwind of 20 to 30mpg, and had the worst bumps of my flying times when I turned inland. i spoke to Langebaanweg ATC and told them I will try for Aurora, but might divert to Papkuolsfontein where the runway was not against the mountains, and somewhat wider than my dirttrack at Autora. Climbed to 3000 feet, and held on tight, descended in one go, and was grateful when I felt that ground effect.

HAPPY 2012!

See my logs for the last couple of flips in Aurora for 2011 and the first 2 of 2012 - http://www.zu-dve.com

In 2011 I flew 84.9 hours, which is less than previous years ... a downward trend (2010 = 137.8 and 2009 = 156.9)

The reason ? Flyin buddies not so keen, I am too lazy to get up early, wind worse than previous years, no fly-ins.

2012 will see me doing my 1000th hour - I have to date 940.1 solo hours on a trike.

Happy and prosperous 2012 to you too. Your flying hours are impressive...... Yes mine have also tapered off. Sad, but will pick that up again this year.
Now for medical and atf and then back in the air.

Pick those hours up again Gert. We all enjoy your posts and your photos although we don't often comment. Perhaps we are just jealous!?

Happy 2012 to you and yours!

After the storms of the weekend in Aurora, this morning I got to the field, and the windsock was not really doing anything. Have a look at the video - Aurora lies against the Piket Mountain, and if there is an easterly, it is slap bang on the lee side. Some years ago I flew to Aurora, and abandoned my approach about 1 mile west of Aurora, when the turbulence got to me (see http://www.zu-dve.com/logs/20070805.jpg ). My guess is that this morning, the easterly was just picking up, and whereas in a stronger easterly the turbulence is further away from town, this morning I got the first test-vortices. I landed, adjusted the camera, took off in the opposite direction, and promptly did a teardrop circuit and called it a day. The teardrop video is the second one, and not as impressive:

Sure enough, 20 minutes later the easterly was howling, and felt within the town as well.

The sportsfield's new lights suffered as well. That pole seems a bit "lig in die broek", doesn't it?
