I want to share this...
Now I am sharing this (not preaching) as I think this is relevant to all of us….
About 6 months ago a very good mate of ours who flew regularly and a very passionate aviator collapsed in his hangar. Unfortunately it has not been good for him.
Now this made us all think at our club, eish, if it can happen to him, it can happen to us. Same set up exactly, own business, pressures of work, family, cash flow and all the trimmings that go with it. By virtue of the fact that we fly it isolates us by lifestyle and our behavior patterns. I would imagine the average microlight pilot is between 40-60 years old, used to be a biker ,surfer, hang glider pilot or other similar sport.
Now flying is a more mellow form of a similar activity.
Except that we all add kilos and still consider ourselves “as fast as we were” but now better at it !!
This is not true, engines wear, parts wear out and we must also review ourselves as well…
We all know that in our formative years we could party until three, then partake in Egyptian PT and then go to work, surf, and then do it all again…Now the brain thinks it still can (mine at least) but the body rebels..
Anyway I had a renewal coming up and things didn’t look good on the health front, blood pressure high and the body needed a tune up. As a Enjinear I study things and reviewed the entire project with a view to losing weight but not suffering the same as our mate…
Weight loss sorts out most issues as well as improves rate of climb, makes the bike go faster etc.
Its also the most difficult thing in the world to achieve, my body has to have a Guinness injection every day, it needs red wine, mature cheese. Cheque book technology to lose weight can nail you. Excessive gym and all the wonderful weight projects. Give us R10,000.00 and lose 20 kgs in two week numbers. Didn’t do it for me.
I have lost 13 kgs, BP (have my own measuring tool) at 127/78 no specific diets, small red wine every day, no bread, beer, Cornish pasties, cheese (aah), no panados, worse no Guinness, no pasta and lots of protein, fish and chicken and chinese vegetables. I drink plenty of water. I feel good as well. Intend to lose another 5 kgs now…
I don’t want praise for this, not at all, I just want to share the fact that it can happen to us and if we wish to carry on flying and enjoying this wonderful country then we need to take a look at our lifestyle…If I can do it, trust me anybody can…
Looking forward to the break for some early morning coastal flights with a ipod and camera..and on my own !
Enjoy the Christmas period and fly safe…and also thanks for supporting Air Magic !

Agree with you Zulu - Health is wealth and without it - we cannot do any of the things we enjoy
Sad, I know
After visiting Ireland a few months back I can confirm that Guinness is the most fattening substance known to man, without a doubt (Also fantastic, lets be honest)
Keep it up Zulu, 5kg is easy to loose -( I was going to use the "cheers" smiley, but wont
)

Well done, yip - I lost a couple of kilo's too but unfortunately gained some again - Be warned that it comes back quicker than you lost it once you slip and start eating lots of carbs (bread, beer, pasta) again. Key is to have a sustainable diet. I also found that chicken, fish, lean meat, veg and salad is the way to go and try to only eat carbs such as oats or pro-vita once daily and limit alchohol (For interest sake protein and carbs have 4calories per gram, fat has 9calories and alchocol 7calories per gramI have lost 13 kgs, BP (have my own measuring tool) at 127/78 no specific diets, small red wine every day, no bread, beer, Cornish pasties, cheese (aah), no panados, worse no Guinness, no pasta and lots of protein, fish and chicken and chinese vegetables. Re: I want to share this...
Well done Paul.
Unfortunately as we get older the old metabolism slows down and it becomes harder to stay in shape (Yes, i know round is also a shape).
I think that the biggest problem is nutrition. Eating the wrong stuff as well as not eating frequently enough.
Body type also makes a huge difference. An endomorph body type just has to look at a guinness and will put on a kilo - and then really kak to lose it.
Its also hard to stay motivated to get fit and exercise
Anyway lets face facts, its too late for 2011.
I say quaff all the beer/guinness you can now, enjoy Xmas and start getting into shape in Jan

I'm overweight.... yes (24kgs over)
Do a class 2 medical.... yes
Pass a class 2 medical.... yes (did that Monday)
BP... 117/65
PR... 60
ECG... on the treadmill... no problem... LIKE A YOUNG MAN!
But have to agree with Paul.... when I hit 40, my metabolism hit a brick wall.... you just give the Red Heart & Coke a mere glance and the kilojoules are transformed into immaculately transferred fat globules... they say "You Are What You Eat & Drink...." this comment however should be read within context

Re: I want to share this...
Hiya All;
Yes - weight is an issue in my life too; and hitting the big 50 could also result in the slowing of my metabolism by quite a bit. With the new year here; I have taken on "Weigh Less"... it works and it's formula is a healthy balanced way of eating... I've been on it for a week and already lost 2.2 kgs... I know that pace will slow down but my aim is to have lost 25 kgs by June... I CAN DO IT...
Good Luck to you all who are trying to loose the weight... I know it can be difficult... just on the alcohol side.. drink Whisky and water; drink Gin and also Rum... one tot is counted as 1 fat... on weight less you are allowed 3 fats per day... so you can still be sociable...
Enjoy... I hope 2012 brings you many wonderful Blessings...
Hugs...

Re: I want to share this...
I'll add a few cents here as well, because I try and do this as regularly as possible.
There are two spices that you need to have in your life - Cayenne pepper and Cinnamon.
It's tough in the beginning, but I drink one teaspoon of Cayenne pepper in hot water, at least once a day. Not only does it push up your metabolism, but it cleans all the plaque out of your arteries etc.
"If you master only one herb in your life, master cayenne pepper; it is more powerful than any other. Herbs can cure serious, scary diseases, but not by taking a capsule here and there. You need to know dosages, what forms of the herb, how to apply them, in what combinations, and when. If you want to become a powerful healer for yourself and your family, master one herb...cayenne pepper. Knowing cayenne deeply will give you and your family more cures than dabbling in twenty herbs. Learn cayenne deeply before you go on to anything else. At the top of the list [ten most important herbs] is cayenne pepper, because it will make the other nine work better. There's no other herb that increases your blood flow faster than cayenne. There are none that work faster; none that work better. There is no other herb stronger or more effective than cayenne to make immediate physiological and metabolic changes in the body."
- Dr. Richard SCHULZE, Medical Herbalist
People consider cayenne to be one of the most powerful herbs on the planet because it "moves blood". It can make your ears pop, give you a feeling of blood rushing to your head, and make your feet and toes tingle. Much of cayenne's healing action occurs right in the mouth immediately as it touches your tongue absorbing in seconds where nerve endings send signals throughout the body instantly. Waves of fresh blood are claimed sent wherever you are sick and new healing begins in seconds as cayenne blasts through the blockages in sick areas of the body. It turns your circulation on in seconds and when combined with other herbs changes a so-so-herb into a mighty one, thus experts propose it be used in every herbal formula. Cayenne contains flavonoids that will heal heart cells as well as protect the heart. Cayenne contains vitamins that will destroy bacteria and increase one's immune system.
The recommended way to take Cayenne is in tincture and powder form. Tincture is super fast acting, while powder (can be mixed with hot water) is needed in the worst cases. People may be sensitive to it at first but these same people can be taking "two dropperfulls" of the most potent tonic in three or four months. You just need to work your way up and a good initial dose is 1/16th of a teaspoonful in some juice. Like most herbs cayenne is very dosage related. The dose one would take for sore throats, intestinal bleeding, heart attack or a brain hemorrhage are very different from one another.
You may be wasting your time if you take cayenne pepper in capsules. Schulze strongly states "there is only one way to take cayenne, and that is right in the mouth." Apparently surges of fresh blood do not occur when you bypass the mouth with capsules and even those who have been taking Cayenne for years in capsule form get a new meaning when properly using the herb. Cayenne in capsules is claimed to be low quality in spite of fancy labeling. If someone is ill with gallstones or has stomach ulcers, Schulze tells us capsules are definitely the wrong way to use cayenne.
High quality Cayenne produces high quality healing. Cayenne pepper is normally rated in 40,000, 60,000 or 70,000 heat units. Lower heat cayenne is less efficient than higher heat cayenne and is the most highly contaminated. Many companies claim a high heat cayenne but when you taste them its not as hot as labeled. A lot of cayenne has a smoky smell and a dark color meaning it has been heated very high during the powdering process losing nutrients and enzymes cooking the healing ability right out of it. It is recommended to buy high quality freshly grown herbs.
Our particular interest in Cayenne Pepper is it's ability to increase blood flow to sick areas of the body. As you evaluate Cayenne Pepper consider it a vehicle to get other things where you want them to go by strategically timing when you take it. For example you might take it an hour after you take vitamin and mineral supplements or drink colloidal silver. Dr. Schulze says that one might even time Cayenne by taking it every other hour. Whatever you choose to do, cayenne is sure to get your interest and attention with the statement that blasts through blockages in the body opening them up to new healing. Like many things, you start on a low gradient and build up.
1. FRESH GARLIC or pickled garlic is a natural antibiotic, a blood sugar regulator, and also works like a thermogenic in your body. It boosts metabolism and keeps insulin levels low to maximize fat burning.
2. EDAMAME (Soybeans) contain lecithin, which can help your body to keep your cells from accumulating fat. You can steam them or there are even dried or roasted snacking versions that are great when you're on the go.
3. APPLES & BERRIES are a delicious source of pectin, which limits the amount of fat your cells absorb because of its water-binding properties. Apples are my go-to snack (along with a teaspoon of raw organic nut butter) most of the time.
4. GINGER expands your blood vessels and can increase your metabolism by nearly 20%. It also detoxifies your body as it stimulates circulation throughout.
5. CINNAMON helps your body to metabolize sugar about 20 times faster and lower your body’s blood-sugar levels, which will help keep fat off. And all it takes is about 1/4 of a teaspoon added to your meal or snack. Try sprinkling some on some apple slices, or on Jungle oats with raw honey!
i stopped drinking alcohol 3 and a half years ago, started drinking more water and the result...........I lost 12kg, and my eyesight improved to the point where for the 2nd year running i passed my eye test without glasses. At 47 i feel just as good as i did at 37
Reminds me of an old joke where the fellow goes to the doctor because he feels rundown, tired, his heart wants to attack him, etc. The doc tells him to give up drinking, smoking, women, parties, etc. and to start drinking more water, go to bed early, and all the rest of it. he asks "will I live longer if Ido all this". The doc replies "no, but it will surely feel like it".

I found that very interesting and I have also read about the health and especially diet benifits of cayene and cinamon (Recently in a book called the 4 hour body by Timothy Ferris).
Can you recommend a brand of cayene and also Cinnamon? Supermarket bought or health shop?
Please keep sharing what you know - I will definately read and I am sure plenty others, we can keep it going under this thread

Yes Yes... keep this stuff coming....
I'm all for natural and healthy weight loss especially if one can include it into your daily intake. I detest calorie watching... eg. the Weight Watchers branded foodstuffs often have a higher fat content than other branded foodstuffs.
To include Cayenne, Ginger & Cinnamon into ones daily routine is easily achievable I'm sure.... going to give it a go!

Ok.. here goes...
I have a word doc that I put together, and it's too big to add here, but it deals with a whole lot of beneficial herbs and spices - maybe one of the mods can add it for me ? (all info collected from articles published in an online health column - dont know who to credit with the detailed information)
All of the information that I have provided does not constitute medical advice - I'm making it available as it has a place and if it works for you, then great.
As far as the Cayenne & Cinnamon is concerned, I steer away from the supermarkets, and rather go to a health shop, as they dont irridiate the good stuff out of it.
Also, I have two wonderful "products", one that helps with spastic colon, or IBS, and another that removes strange looking growths off your skin...
