I started flying Thunderbirds at Rhino park a few years ago and enjoyed every moment flying these planes.
The turbulence was sometimes hectic but the experience was always better than to be on the ground.
After the T-bird it was on to Gyros enjoying every moment in it.
Missed the T-bird for those early morning flights and handling rough runways ,but loved the way the Gyro manage turbulence.
Then I got a bee in my bonnet to fly bigger fixed wings.
The Cessna’s was a bit expensive so I decided to do my PPL on Jabiru’s and instrument hours on C 172.
Enjoyed every moment of flying. Now I can take my dad and son on trips in the 4 seater Jabiru.
The speed and companionship made up for the bit of extra turbulence compared to the Gyro.
It is a pity that there are so many lapse PPL’s due to the Pilots not considering “Blik” alternatives.
I had a great flight yesterday alone in my Gyro from Kittyhawk to Loskopdam and thought to myself DOES IT REALLY MATTER WHAT YOU FLY ?
Does it matter what you fly ?
Re: Does it matter what you fly ?
No it does not matter what you fly.
As long as you Fly and Enjoy it

As long as you Fly and Enjoy it

Re: Does it matter what you fly ?
Nope - its doesnt matter what you fly -
Flying for me is about the enjoyment of being in the air, even if around the extended patch... but more than that its about the fellowship and friendship of flying away together, in whatever craft you enjoy.... and being able to discuss, laugh, learn from and assist where possible - its about the beer on the ground wishing you were in the air (on bad weather days) and braais after an awesome flight
imho anyway

Re: Does it matter what you fly ?
Nice topic..
I own a Cessna, Cheetah and a cheapie (Dualstar) and to me it does not matter what I fly. I instruct in the Cheetah and sometimes do not even touch the controls for a few lessons. That is when the serious urge to fly kicks in.
To me it then does not matter what I fly but I have to get up there alone! I suppose speed and turbulence matters a bit but to me it is essentialy about the flight. Pssst dont tell everybody but I do think the smaller rag and tube planes are more fun than the "blik"
aeries but lets keep that between ourselves.

Larry

To me it goes without saying that lap en pyp is more fun that a blik, ( I think too) because its a less "formal" for want of a better word way of flying ?? Its low and slow, doors off (in the case of 3 axis) wind in your face flying.... and its awesome... in whatever

Maybe my reference to “blik” aeries is not valid.
The Foxbat and Sling are great “blik” aeries for recreational use

Nope it doesn't matter what you fly, as long as you fly.
Due to some unfortunate and in a way fortunate circumstances I now fly a Kite on weekends
. I know what it's like to be on the
kite and what it's like to be looking up at it.
Trust me......better to be on IT!!!
By the way Alan (Bundy) and Stef congrats on your new baby. What a feeling that must be.
You make me
Hopefully it won't be too long again and I can resume and finish my license.

Hi Thunder-bird.
your remarks are of the type that toutches deep and require a respond.
I started flying as a very young boy...with pigeons..!!!
Then i promoted to kites..Those you build by yourselves and fly it with a very long string of cotton.
After that it took me about 60 yrs before i took of by myself in a trike..and a year or two later in a thunderbird...
My next move will be a cheeta.!!!There-after angel wings.

Yes Bundy i agree with you, well said.!!!

Re: Does it matter what you fly ?
Hey,
I wanted to fly but cud not afford to do the ppl,so I skydived..was the closest I came to flying.
When I started flying microlights,I knew this is where I was meant to be...I wud rather buy a Quik than a Chestnut 182 if I had the cash
Not that I don't like bliks...guess the whole skydiving, superbikes, microlights has the open air feeling...the love for the element, for the rush of fresh air across your face...blowing up a fat smile
No matter what u fly...enjoy it..for you are doing what birds does best
