Re: FIBRE GLASS FUEL TANK
You can not use normal plyester resin, it starts to form a gel in the tank and does not react very well with fuel, especially if the fuel has some ethanol in.
Use a very high quality vinyester resin for the job. Not all vinyester resins are equal. This is the right stuff - DERAKANE 470-300 Epoxy Vinyl Ester Resin
Brief description
DERAKANE 470-300 Resin is an epoxy novolac-based vinyl ester, designed to provide exceptional mechanical properties at higher temperatures. This resin offers a high resistance to solvents and chemicals, good retention of strength and toughness at elevated temperatures and excellent resistance to acidic oxidizing environments.

How many layers are necessary for a tank?
Re: FIBRE GLASS FUEL TANK
As far as i know at least 3 layers all round.hennies1 wrote:How many layers are necessary for a tank?
you can also slosh the inside of the tank with a 3M tank sealer.

Hi Guys
Interesting news. I've been thinking a while of trying my hand on a fuel tank. What would one use for a mould ?

Re: FIBRE GLASS FUEL TANK
Over here in the UK....some guys are having probs with the older fibre glass tanks leaking due to ethanol they think.

Re: FIBRE GLASS FUEL TANK
Only leaking or forming a gel? I am only worried about gel blocking the outlet from the tank causing fuel starvation.

Re: FIBRE GLASS FUEL TANK
Sorry I dont know....the ones I know of are Shadow owners...some are fitting alloy tanks to replace the fibre glass ones.

This is probably the best idea. For a one-off tank, welded aluminium will probably be a lot cheaper and easier than making a composite tank.nickjaxe wrote:Sorry I dont know....the ones I know of are Shadow owners...some are fitting alloy tanks to replace the fibre glass ones.
