New AX Sport

Postby CFD » Sun Mar 13, 2011 8:39 pm

Not Exactly breaking news anymore but Donald Williamson's prototype carbon composite fully aerobatic AX Sport is going through the testing phase and can be seen regularly at Morningstar. A production version will be available in the coming year. The aircraft will be optimized for use with the new 116H.P. Lycoming 233 but will take up to 160H.P. The AX Sport will be an affordable fully aerobatic machine and has been designed in conjunction with aeronautical engineer Andrew Parsons.

It is great to have aviation pioneers like Donald at WCMC and we wish him all the best in this venture and look forward to filling out trophy cabinet in the years to come.

These beautiful foto's do not show the immaculate detail, the whole process is just to be admired.

Donald you are a DUDE.

Good luck with the whole project.

The exact details and specs of the production model are still to determined as it will differ from this prototype in many respects. The main difference will be the fuselage construction which will be a composite monocoque instead of the skinned chrome-molly version seen here on the development prototype. This and other tweaks should result in a weight saving of at least 60Kg!

Donald reports that she handles like a pussy cat on the ground and in the air has a roll rate to die for!

(^^) She really does look great! Good luck!

One day when I'm big, I'd love to do the necessary training and get myself into a low wing like this. The view out of the cockpit looks awesome. Barrel rolls are a bit difficult in the weightshift Im currently flying! ha ha

Nice looking. Bears some resemblance to an Xtra crossed with a GK1.

This is the prototype you see in the pictures, it has an streched nose and the reason for this is that they are doing the initial flight tests using a 2stroke 100hp fuel injected motor which is much lighter than the production types optional motor which is 120Hp as far as I remember. According to Donald the moulds for the production are being completed and the nose is perfectly in proportion to the rest of the airframe. I you see what this aircraft is capable of with 100hp, its going to be amazing with 120 - 140hp
