Re: Scratch built Super Cub
The original Cubs were built, using SAE 1020 cold rolled tubing and were gas welded. No 4130, or TIG welding those days!
Re: Scratch built Super Cub
I bought a half- finished project built from these plans a couple of years back. Looked at this lot, and decided that I hav`nt enough of my life left to complete this thing. Sold the lot. The Cub that you can build from these plans, IF you do a good job, will be a 100% copy of the original. It CAN be done, yes, but then you REALLY will have to have your finger out. The Fuselage that I bought was gas welded. A beeeeadifull job. Still kinda sorry I sold it?? But then I needed the money for my family.

Re: Scratch built Super Cub
Last post from Trytofly was 14 June 2008. Sounds like he stripped his moer when people started to query his choice of engine? Would like to know if he changed his choice of engine? If so, what did he go for? Is the plane flying? Pse advise.
If one look at Wikipedia, it appears that the original L-18 was the Military version of the PA-18 Super Cub. It was fitted with a C-90-8F engine and developed 95 hp.
Important - it had no flaps. When flaps were fitted (on the later Super Cubs), a O-235 engine was fitted. This developed 108hp (continiously) and 115hp for take-off. Apparently a go-around with flaps and only 95hp was a bit risky.

Hi Cubnut2, Trytofly has moved up to Zambia, where he tells me that their CAA or equivalent is very aviation unfriendly. I am not sure what he has done with his project, but right now, nothing is happening on it.
