Jokes aside guys..

I am just wondering how much one should insure a trike for. Someone above mentioned that "ground insurance" is about 50 bucks a month... Bargain!

But I have heard that it can cost up to R3000 a month to insure a trike, obviously dependant on its value! Hell after one year, at those premiums I could have replaced my trike with a second hand one. Biggest reason for me asking is that I will probably have to finance my aerie (not through the bank) and am a bit worried about the repercutions should I (touch wood no) have an oopsie!

Views and guidance needed! F@K mense ek is arm! ha ha.

New to GA and am asking myself the same questions you are...
To my mind, my first priority is 3rd Party cover. I need to be able to cover the lawsuit should I fly into a dinner party of heart surgeons... In similar vein, and maybe a bit more realistic any damage to property, i.e. Telkom or Eskom infrastructure or someone's car. The costs involved with such an accident would be severely taxing for most of us!

My plan is therefore to go for comprehensive 3rd party insurance and then for at least the first year of flying I want to cover the plane for any hiccups I might experience... That should then give me enough time to have insurance pay for any slight mishaps and hopefully in a year from now I'll have a feel for how accident prone I might be... ;-)\
Thereafter I'll stick to the 3rd party and the 'ground insurance' against any mishaps of breakins while in storage...

Hope this is of some assistance?

I also have a question. Insurance premiums increase with the insured value. If my main concern is to cover loss in the case of an oopsie, can one make an exclusion to the insured value?

Specifically I am talking about the engine. There is a good chance that the engine will be ok (912s with slipper clutch). So could I exclude the engine and its value from the insured value which would drop the premiums a lot?

Very relevant question Thatchman, if this were possible, I for one would want to remove my engine from the insured value of the plane, for the reasons which you mentioned.

I have heard that if your engine requires a tear down after a prop strike, the insurance payout component is dependant on, amongst other things, time to run to TBO

What if- Your exclused motor packs up creating a destructive landing. Insurance won't pay, or hold the motor owner liable for reimbursement?

So... when you insure your car - do you ask them to exclude the engine? NOPE (but being comprehensively insured includes 3rd party in motor cars.)

It's a package deal - either all or nothing pertaining to the risk item! Things like 3rd Party cover etc. are extras and must be asked for!

I am impressed with your humour guys... but normally I moered okes with the pole as I'm too heavy to do the vertical spinning thing without falling a hole in the ground and cracking my little bone in the posterior! If I used the medical term for this bone.... I can just imagine the comments then

Almost Lennie, but I was referring to the "tail bone" or for the more informed coccyx - I was worried the latter would draw extreme comments!
