Going walkabout for a while....
Guys, I am leaving sivilization first sparrow tomorrow for the Fairest, gettting on human flying cattletruck, bound for the Big Apple, and skould be back on the air arount the 6th of Oct. Not looking forward to the prospect of flying in the BEEEEEG aeries, especially as I spent a most enjoyable hour late afternoon flying my new Explorer. Untill then, fly safe and be good. In my Pa se beroemde woorde: Ek wil NIKS kak van julle hoor nie!!!!!!

Re: Going walkabout for a while....
I am back!! Jetlagged, dog-tired en moeg. Flight to and from NY, via Dubai is a thriller. TOO LONG!!! , but their service is exelent and their stewardesses very pretty indeed.... now if only their pilots would just learn to LAND the 777`s!!
Thank God I am a Soufeffriken. Die Amerikaners praat almal Engels met n albastertjie innie bek. Moes moooooi luister om alslag te verstaan, en is n paar keer snaaks aangekyk: "But you`re white?..." Well, last time I looked!!
I did not go to Manhattan Island. I was there before, did noy like the place then, so why go there again? The rest of NY city is coming apart at the seams. The roads are kak and the place is incredibly dirty. The customs system at JFK sucks and wasted more than an hour of our valuable time. Rural NY is another story.....very pretty countryside with lots of trees, and leaves discolouring with the coming of early autumn. Made me think of an old Japanese proverb: Autumn is a second spring, because then every leaf turns into a flower. We spent some time at small airfields, chatting to like-minded fellows about flying. Generally not enough money for gas, is the most often heard complaint. It is not a very safe place to fly small aeroplanes, for if the engine goes phut, unless you are bloody lucky, you will go into the trees, which I belief, is about on par to tripping over a wheelbarrow in the dark....think about it.
In general lots of small, buggered up, but fixable aeries around. The problem is that, with the high humidity you have to fly the aeroplane regularly, and get it up to temperature, otherwise internal corrosion results.
Their main freeways are stunning. not a piece of litter to be seen anywhere. Everyone driving well within the speed limits and not a "Taxi-bus" in sight. VERY NICE. Small town America is a friendly place, with lots of small diners and little motels in abundance. We met some very interesting folks, and had a good time. I would like to go again sometime, but then with some more time on my hands.
On the way back to new york, we passed close enough to the very pretty town of Rhinebeck, so we decided to vist the famed Old Rhinebeck flying circus. Lots of old hangars filled with OLD aeroplanes obviously still being flown on a regular basis. The rotary engines dripping oil that smells like casor oil!! There is much neclect and decay in the display hangars. The dampness causing priceless old aeroplanes, engines and irreplacable old cars bikes and other old stuff to rust. Chipmunks nesting everywhere inside the old planes, and even wings. Not nice to see. Unfortunately no flying on weekdays, and a not-too-friendly oldish lady in charge. I tried my best but could not get a smile out of her.

Welcome back. Glad to hear you still in one piece.
Also glad to hear that I'm not the only one that thinks that New York is dirty and falling apart at the seams.
