African Pilot Special Newsletter 22A - 2010
Thursday 3 June 2010
“Men (or women) in authority will always think that criticism of their policies is dangerous. They will always equate their policies with patriotism and find criticism subversive.”
Henry Steele Commager.
Special African Pilot newsletter
This special mid-week newsletter has been published to advise General Aviation Pilots and Sport Pilots about the SAAF meeting to be held this evening. Unfortunately the notice was issued in the NOTAMS, which I am sure we all know that they are not widely read these days due to The SA CAA’s new system of providing CDs for the NOTAMS.
Thank you to the monitors of AWSA for sending out this information. E-mail:

Flying during the soccer world cup – Gauteng region
The SAAF would like to invite all interested parties from GA and sport recreation aviation to a briefing on flying during the FIFA Soccer World Cup in the Gauteng region.
Venue: AFB Waterkloof Movements.
Date: Thursday 3 June 2010 Time: 19h00 - today.
The monitors of AWSA would like to apologise for late notice but we only received the notification today.
We understand the notice has been published in the NOTAMS
Editor comments
It is rather disappointing that the SAAF only use the NOTAMS to publish important notices that affect GA. This newsletter reaches the desktops of thousands of affected pilots and I would happily distribute the said information in good time if the SAAF officers in charge would use this medium to send their notifications to pilots affected by FIFA rules.
Centralised Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) Service Centre
All flight-planning is herewith centralised to the new AIM Service Centre in Johannesburg and withdrawn from all other ATNS ATSU’s. A local call-share telephone number, as indicated below, has been established to minimize additional telephone costs. Clients are encouraged to make use of the web service, file2fly, as first option when filing flight-plans and retrieving pre-flight briefings. Flight-plans can be filed up to six days in advance of date of flight. Clients wishing to file on date of flight are encouraged to file flight-plans not less than three to six hours in advance of Estimated Off Block Time (EOBT). However, a minimum of 30 to 40 minutes is required to process the flight-plan. Advanced filing of flight-plans assists with tactical operational planning and Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM).
