WHO's listing out for other traffic on 124.80, while people have lengthly chats on 123.45.

These are probably the guys that go wizzing past you and you wonder where the h#@#$ll he came from, because he is not announcing himself on the official frequency or listening to your announcments. I can understand changing over to the chat frequency for a brief encounter, but to sit on it for ages, you are just flying around up there blind and this means that so is everybody else ( not that it is their fault ). I just can not understand how people think it is safe to fly around off frequency for any length of time, unless you are in the middle of Namibia and know that there is definitely no other traffic.

U so right Koala
Amazing how unprofesional lisensed ac operators can be!, nothing wrong having a 123.45 chat, but its like a kid getting a walkie talkie for x mas, might as well stand on the ground chatting, seems like they forget to enjoy the flying part. But hey, lets not get nasty, or let this site turn into a avcom mudslinging....Monitor and use 124.8 more guys!, do not give the wrong people ammo against micro or light ac operators.

What is all the kak about? It should be used when people are making general enquiries etc when they are flying. IE a few guys are flying and they need to clarify some points. Switch to 123.45 . Ask the questions do the talking and that is it. Nice to ask the guy his position etc and work off that if you are unsure.

I have always asked the guys on the fly aways in the past to broadcast chats on 130.35 and to inform their intentions when switching from 124.8 so that one of us could monitor the appropriate traffic. Never had any kak on that channel. Used to use it as our first solo frequency on the day. One person would monitor 124.8 and the other 130.35. Never any hectic chat

I realise things have changed ,

This is my concern. 5 minutes off frequency you can miss a lot. 5 minutes is enough for a fast blik to be on you after entering an airspace. To be honest I am fairly paraniod about it and get miffed when I spot an earie that I was not aware off due to radio silence, as far as i am concerned that classifies as a near miss.

I have never used 123.45 before as I have never felt the need. When flying with someone else you can usually communicate intentions in the form of your usual TIBA broadcast. And generally frequencies are clear enough to have a short discussion on where to go...

The point I was trying to make was that if you are flying as a group towards a destination then if you have the need to say something then go to the "chat" channel. Be precise and then leave it at that. I on all my fly aways with a group of friends have always monitored/done the calls for the correct frequency for the area. Imagine 6 trikes en route to Port St John's, Margate does not want to hear each aircraft so I would call my call sign and however many trikes and receive the instructions thereafter.

I hate endless chatter on any channel so if I came across as condoning it I apologise.

Cheers,
