Most common problem. Stock Exhaust valves or did you change them beforehand?.

(**) Hey guys, stripped engine, dropped exhaust valve #2. :x Me thinks the damage was done in the 1st heat on shifting down for Nashua 2, i blipped the throttle and it touched the rev limitter @ 7500 free reving. All exhaust valves were marked, but me thinks #2 took the bigger hammering. Also the guy doing the dyno work likes to retard the cam timing so sure this also contibuted to the dammage  Oh well, back to the drawing board for me. Better luck next time ##

I used to rev mine to 7800 and never had a valve touch becuase of that. When they do touch is when you downshift and let the clutch out and it overruns the rpm bigtime - also sometimes cause the belt to jump a tooth. As a matter of course we used to swop the stock Exhaust valves for a solid stainless valve - the stock valve is sodium filled to transfer heat better but it makes them weak.

Hey Stephan, i hear you. I have never had so much s#&t with a golf engine. Used to race them back when it was still the "GTi challenge" in 1996. Also, had stainless valves originally and they lasted all of about 45 seconds. Confused us all including Shaun van der Linde. We put everything together and started the engine and about 45 sec later bang, 7 valves bent at idle. Shaun eventualy found that the front cam cap had a slightly tighter clearance and was gripping the cam and it stripped the belt. How is that for s#@t luck!!! (**)

That's a bummer. The guy that put the head together should have picked that up..
