How do I clean my air cleaners on the 582? I get different advice. Water, petrol or what and how?

Another popcorn and coke scenario..
Sunlight dishwashing liquid and lukewarm water. Swish, swish, swish, rinse, rinse (with clean water) Let dry naturally.
I don't do the spraying of oil thingy on the filters.......no doubt others will castigate me for it

Definitely NO petrol or other chemicals........you'll ruin it

Purchased my seriously expensive filter oil spray along with ample synthetic oil and followed said advice by washing in Sunlight soup. Next high miler said "W.T.F don't use that crap and leave that k@k oil alone†Sold the trike.
With the 912S, they said, "No need for the K& N spray" so left my accessories to collect.
On last AP was told, "rinse the filters in Sunlight and spray with K & N oil as per manufacturer's spec".
Don't get rid of your excess stuff, thing seem to change.

Planes don't get as much dust as quads, but forget to oil your quad filter for one race and bye bye motor. Keep them clean and oil them. No oil, nothing to trap the smaller particles. Probably won't notice much on a 582 because you expect smoke, but on a 912? Can you afford to risk it????

Hey guys,
From Rotax maintainance manual,
11.17 ) For a higher lifespan etc etc , filter corrugations have to be moisturized with oil, will loose their effectiveness against dirt if not oiled.
I have used luke warm water , a little sunlight soap and after dry a spray of K & N oil - no problems.
11.17.2 ) never use gasoline, steam, caustic liquids, detergents ? or high pressure cleaning - rinse filter from inside to outside - let dry in free air, dont use compressed air"
I think that it depends on the conditions you fly in & the runways condition, eg very dusty calls for cleaning more often,
I think that the more dust & dirt that your motor ingests the more wear and expense later.
I have always sprayed my filters with oil

Thanks for the help guys. The reason for asking the question is exactly because of the different answers I got. A very experienced AP and instructor adviced me to clean with petrol as he never had a problem. I like the luke warm water and dish washing soap. What is this K&N oil? I live in the boendoes and need something I can buy in the “â€Handelshuis

K&N is a brand name.
you need air filter oil, available from any bike shop and Midas spares shop
Just remember, if you have cleaned it once with petrol then the fibres are already damaged. There is no going back

Now I'm worried! Any way you can tell the condision of an air filter? They are to expensive just to change if you'r not sure.Morph wrote:K&N is a brand name.

if you wash it in water and dish washing liquid it should go back to it's brownish yellowish colour. If it has been washed in petrol even once it will stay dark.
You can continue to use it like this and continue to wash it in petrol but it is not as efficient as a normally washed one. I would replace it at the next major service.
The oil you add afterwards is really a dust trap, especially if you fly from sand runways. If you fly from tar not too much of an issue.
