Re: The Microland Files Episode 1: 17/11/2012
I felt hugely honoured when Bundy asked me to talk on this extremely exciting topic.
No normal pilot should like turbulence and it is natural to feel so. Yet, everyone of us will at some stage experience turbulence. The idea is to chat about what to look for when you are in the air when turbulence starts to throw you around. What do you look for, and how do you react, and on what do you base your options and decisions. All answers are not always in a book, they might be in simple visual observations.
I bought my first trike at a "moerse" bargain because the previous owner (3 hours under the belt since he got his license) took his girlfriend for a flight at 14h00 in December with a lovely and hungry cumulus building directly over the airfield at Lazertronics. Needless to say why he sold, and at a good price at that!
We can however give turbulence names, and I am hoping to share some of this. By learning to know your "enemy", you can actually get to live with him. You can learn when to avoid him at all costs, and at other times actually not be bothered to fly while being shaken around.
Looking forward to the 17th.

Re: The Microland Files Episode 1: 17/11/2012
Thanks Kloot - I am very keen on this topic. I have endured turbulence at times, wishing I was on the ground, and at other times I have taken of at 12h00 in December on the Highveld for a flip, actively seeking out the climbs and being amazed at my VSI going 800 - 1000 ft pm with no power. I just stay up there for ever, although it BUMPS! (It is cheap though, especially nowadays..you get a lot of bang for your buck, fuelwise..) I sometimes want to avoid it, and sometimes want to look for it.
Obviously the above refers to "thermal" turbulence - I have learned my lesson with any form of Cumulonimbus boiling up into the skies - even if they are seemingly rained out and miles away:
viewtopic.php?f=35&t=17867
And for the benefit of some of our newly qualified ML Trikers, read the original account on how I thought I had just killed a pax: shock:
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=17796&hilit=gustfront&start=15
Looking forward to your insights Kloot. I think it will both ease up people who are too worried about mild turbulence, and tone down some pilots on what is actually acceptable.
I think glider pilots are the only pilots that REALLY understand the sky!

Hi Alan
I too, like klein and Blue Eagle, would like a recorded copy of the talk. Very happy to pay for it if there's any chance you can get a good recording done!
