PRESS RELEASE: AEROBATIC CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SWELLENDAM

Every year around March the skies above the Swellengrebel Flying Club comes alive with the noise of brave pilots pushing themselves and their aircraft to the limit. The Flying Club will again host the Sport Aerobatic Club of South Africa on 3 March 2018 when they choose the best of the best at their Western Cape Regional Championships.

Even though labeled as such, the competition is open to all aerobatic pilots who are members of the Sport Aerobatic Club of SA. According to Helmuth Ludwig of the club it means that we can look forward to entrants from all over the country.

“In the past, and particularly last year we had a very full field indeed. This was mainly the result of South Africa pitching for and indeed winning the bid to host the Unlimited World Aerobatic Champs,” Helmuth said. That contest took place in Malelane near the Kruger Park in September 2017.

It was indeed a great honour for our country and club to host these world championships where no fewer than 36 of the world’s top aerobatic pilots fought it out to determine who was the best pilot in the world. In the end it was Michael Mamistov from Russia who ousted the competition and became Unlimited Aerobatic World Champion.

Mark Sampson of South Africa unfortunately had to withdraw because of aircraft issues. Many of these pilots will be seen in action at one time or another at Swellengrebel airfield either preparing for a contest or indeed competing in the Western Cape Regional Champs.

According to Helmuth the Swellengrebel Flying Club has in the past and still is playing a pivotal role in South Africa’s participation at international level in aerobatic competitions. Helmuth lauded the club, with its first class facilities and location, who generally hosts the first aerobatic contest for the year in South Africa. This gives much needed impetus and sets the tone for the remainder of the year on the aerobatic calendar.

On March 3, we can look forward to seeing Mark Hensman (WC) and Mark Sampson (WC) competing for top honours in Unlimited Class, while Leigh Le Gonidec (WP) will be fighting it out in Advanced.

A special mention must go to Patrick Davidson of Port Elizabeth who competes in the challenger class on the Red Bull Circuit. He is only the second pilot ever from SA to do so.
