Flight around SA - Advice pls

Postby Maybe » Tue Apr 05, 2011 12:17 pm

hi,

We would like to do a trip around south africa (Gauteng to the most western side of SA, then down along the coast, to Cpt and up again along the coast to Richardsbay and then back home)

Slow aeries (90MPH cruise)
Planned for 22 April - 27 April.

 Who has done it before?
 Where can we ask for advice? (or links to ppl who've done it)
 Any do's and don'ts?
 Other tips?
 Weather tips? (for this time of the year)
 Should we perhaps fly the other way around? (to keep the sun out of our eyes in the mornings?)
 Places to get fuel.
 Camping at the airfield / airfields with showers

Any advice are most welcome.

Best bet is to contact the flying clubs along the route. The locals know all the inns and outs. Kuruman has active club as does Upington for first leg.
Boet will be best bet for the west coast and a visit to the megalopolis of moerlandspan (loerrie) is well worth it if even just to see the plenty buggerall there...
Sadanaha Johan Froneman
Cape town am sure the Stellies guys or Morph and co can help
John Boucher in FAMO will be able to assist
Algoa Flying Club in PE and surrounds
Senior Onions and Co at Watts Landing for Slummies and surrounds
The Borsluise from MLPG will be able to help at Margate (There is a BnB at the airfield)
Back to Big smoke depends on how far north you wanna go...

Best bet is to look at map/easyplan and see how far you want to go per day and then get suggested route. Once you have a route you know where you sort of want to stay then take it from there... North Westerly winds going west can be a bitch. I got 60mph when I was planning on 100 between Potch and West Coast.... Not alot of fun. Ditto for the coast winds and WX. Been foggenmisted in on the garden route plenty...

Plan for a rest day every 3-4 days. gat gets square and it lekka to hire a car and go wine routing or fishing or something while away...

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi,
When I did a trip around S.A. my three best companions were my gps, laptop and cellphone.
I cant think of anyplace where I could not get a connection.
I dont think you will be able to cover the complete route over the easter period unless you are very lucky with winds and rain.ect.
I was stuck at Pofadder for two nights and at Grahamstown for four nights.
I relied a lot on a small book called Microlight Airfields in Sout-Africa and as I progressed I used the book and Google to help find me places to land. There are a lot of info in the book with particulars who to call. You need that book..
Good luck.
An experience you will never forget.!!
