AeroVee 2.0 plus Raven/Zodiac FWF for sale

Postby justin.schoeman » Thu Apr 10, 2014 9:16 pm

It seems that the VW just isn't going to work with the HDS wing. I am switching to a Jabiru 3300, and would like to sell the AeroVee.

The complete build thread so far is here:
viewtopic.php?f=23&t=10232&start=555

Here is a video of take-off and climb performance:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... WHYHNyskvE

All the details are on the build thread, but here is a brief run-down.
AeroVee 2.0
90 hours before I purchased it, and did a complete rebuild
10 hours since rebuild
New parts:
Engine case
Both heads
2 cylinders and pistons
Bearings, rings, gaskets, etc.
Everything else has been magnafluxed and measured
All ADs and SBs complete

Due to a slightly under size crank nose, I have replaced the press fit hub with a Revmaster style taper hub.

Known problems:
Oil leak on front main seal
Oil leak on flywheel seal
(Neither leak is significant. Total oil use in first 10 hours < 300ml.)
Large mixture variation with fuel level (pressure regulator and electric pump included but not fitted).

Aerodynamic climb/dive tests indicate approx 77hp engine output (normalised to sea level).

Available to view (running) at Rhino Park for the next week, or two - until I start stripping to fit the Jab.

Can sell engine only, or complete Raven FWF.

R45,000 (neg) for complete FWF.

Thanks,
Justin

Aerovee now has a Turbo upgrade kit for current 2.1L motors @ R43k, don't know if it will work on this 2.0L and maybe it's a bit much but still cheaper to buy this motor and the upgrade kit than to buy a new motor.

Thanks for the bump Jaco. Even though this may put a damper on the sale, I would personally not consider turbo-charging the type-1 VW (turbo-normalising - like Revmaster does - would be OK though). The bottom end is rock solid, and will handle this fine. But I don't see how you can keep the heads cool at those power levels.

But if someone does want to go that way, the turbo kit would fit on this engine without much trouble.

Pleasure Justin, if I had the money I will go this route but with the nikasil cylinders, think it would be perfect for the Turbulent.

Sonex must have found a way to keep the heads cool as they sell it now as one off their engine options. Maybe leave it for a year or so to see what happens with it in the Sonex.

If one looks at Aero-Vee cyl-heads, and you have a Revmaster cyl-head next to it , you can clearly see all the major differences. The Revmaster head has MUCH more cooling openings than the Aero-Vee, the casting is also of a better and thicker quality.

Yes - and even then, Joe only rates his turbo version at 85hp...

vhpy Justin yes that was the R2100 rated @85 hp. The R2300 will be substantially more. They are busy with that project (!!) (!!)

OK - this is something new then. When I phoned Joe (admittedly a few years ago) he said that he would turbo normalise it, maybe with a mild boost. But he did say that he was not going to increase the rated maximum continuous power.
