Comment: It is not often that the isobars are this widely spaced, which indicate great wind-free conditions! vhpy The late-morning and afternoon wind conditions shown in the charts below can largely be attributed to local thermic/heating conditions throughout the days due to the high temperatures and low-wind conditions in the mornings, which allow for significant heating of the earth surface and adjacent air.

Comment: There is a cut-off low system over the country at this time, bringing with it sustained winds and rain (Tues/Wed).

Comment: Again, the cut-off low pressure system can clearly be seen over the country.

What is a "Cut-Off Low"? For those not familiar with cut-off low's, a 'cut-off low' is a low pressure system that becomes 'cut-off', or severed, from the the main planetary circulation and spins off independently. Because it is no longer attached to the westerly pressure wave to the south, it loses all momentum and can just sit for days, or move very slowly before dissipating. Cut-off lows are associated with very strong atmospheric instability and powerful convection up drafts. They also bring a range of severe types of weather, including torrential rainfall, snow on the mountainous areas and violent winds. Cut-off lows are one of the main drivers of damaging floods in South Africa and can also trigger thunderstorms. A good example of the damage that a cut-off low can cause is the Laingsburg flood. For an instant weather report from Aeroden Weather Station (25°43'30.17"S 27°44'23.90"E): SMS "AD" to 38020 (Cost R10 - free SMS do not apply)

CAUTIONARY: High wind conditions prevail for much of the weekend - CARE SHOULD BE EXERCISED! ## Also, always be alert for thunderstorms and dust-devils at this time of year, especially from late morning onwards! ##

Weather Flying Tip: ALWAYS be on the lookout for 'dust-devils' (whirlwinds) when taking off and landing. Recognised by dust, grass and litter being swept skyward in a circular motion, these can be your undoing if you encounter one, especially close to the ground! ##

At FATP (New Tempe) last weekend, a parachutist was caught in a dust-devil and has been left a quadriplegic due to shattered vertebrae! The following photograph is of the actual incident in which the parachutists can be seen coming in for landing - Courtesy AVCOM
