AWESOME flying weather throughout the week, including the weekend ahead!

A little cold, but no cloud or rain, and very low winds on the ground and aloft!!!

Pre-Report Comment: UNBELIEVABLY GOOD FLYING WEATHER . . . . FRIDAY > SATURDAY > SUNDAY > MONDAY!! FLY FLY FLY!! I have included Friday and Monday in the charts so that you can see for yourself how amazing these four days will be! A little cold, yes, but VERY flyable!!

Also, this week I am including the SAWS (South African Weather Service) synoptic chart, which I think is of value in helping you, as pilots, to understand what the weather is doing at this time as well as to predict what is coming down the line, by way of approaching fronts. OK, so the cold front that I thought was going to play havoc is not looking as bad as expected! Comment: The cold front has dissipated slightly, with temperature highs remaining in the 20s and a slight chance of rain. Beware high-level winds!!

Comments: Not a great day for flying especially with respect to the cloud and rain.

Precipitation: No

Comments: A great morning for flying. Watch for winds picking up in the afternoon.

Cloud Cover: Possible low-cloud mid-morning (don't get caught out!)

The weather front is moving south-west to north-east, so left to right in this picture!

Notice the mid-level Mammatus cloud formation on the right over Midrand, highlighted in the NEXT photo:

That means . . . . tomorrow is FLY-TIME!!!

Pre-Report Comment: Saturday is not great for flying - Sunday is a lot better! High level winds are prevalent, so exercise care! My personal rule is that when the orange, red and pink start appearing in the 'winds-aloft' chart I keep my bird hangered!

Comment: The low pressure system over the interior (see Synoptic Chart below) along with the cold front coming through from Cape Town will bring some high-level winds and cold temperatures by Sunday, but no cloud or rain.

Comment: Low pressure system over the interior and cold front currently over the Cape appears set to reach us on Sunday, hence the drop in temperature from a high of 24C on Saturday to 20C on Sunday.

Comments: If you fly, get in early (6 - 8am) - the wind picks up from late morning, increasing to WNW 12-16knots later in the afternoon - SO PLEASE BE CAREFUL!


Sunday 18th August:

Wind: S 6-8 knots decreasing to S 5-7 knots later in the morning.
High-Level Winds: Yes, W 12-20knots
Temperatures: 9-20C
Cloud Cover: No
Precipitation: No

Comments: A MUCH better day for flying! Watch out for the change in wind DIRECTION and strength with altitude (from South on the ground to West at 1000ft AGL). NOTE: Tailwind takeoff on Aeroden 36 - so expect a longer take-off run!

Comment: Low pressure system over Southern Africa (centred on Zambia at this time) with a cold front passing the east coast. Isobars closer than they have been over the past weeks, so wind is to be expected.

Temperatures: 10-22C

Comments: The winds aloft will make Saturday not that pleasant for flying. Be careful of higher wind speeds in the afternoon - picking up to NW 9-13knots!


Sunday 25th August:

Wind: E 5-5 knots increasing to NE 9-11 knots later in the morning.
High-Level Winds: No (12 kots max)
Temperatures: 13-25C
Cloud Cover: No
Precipitation: No

Comments: Definitely a better day for flying although be aware of a quartering tailwind (NE) later on the morning when landing on Aeroden 18!
