Hi Wollie, the judges were very favourable.... gave me a double ostrich egg cup
Engraved on it is "Grand Champion, Kit built aircraft"
There were some
stunning RV's there... dont know how I beat them

Cheers ian
Hi Ian well done!!!
Was there on Sunday and nobody there...pitty!
Lot of the RV's are put together by professionals, or a lot of the work is outsourced to profs. I don't know who was there from the RV crowd, and if any newly build RV entrants on the scene. I think the EAA judges should give credit to people who do most themselves. Anycase RV's have won enough trophies, it is time for a change!!
Well DONE!

Rudi

Ian, does Mapsource also do the vertical maps you uploaded?

Yes Rudi, all from mapsouce once you open up the track properties you click on "show profile"
And many thanks all for your kind words, I must tell you I was very surprised but anyway a real nice way to end the project... (well almost end, still got the rest of the proving flights which I find very interesting to do)
Then its off with the goal to land at every field in SA !

Some proving flight update/info ...
First it was gentle stalls, then circuits and landings, then some longer trips then climb & glide and trying to fine tune the ASI calibration.
Climb & Glide - will re do this again as the pressure was low (thundrstorm arriving) and quite a bit of wind (at least for us spoilt highveld drivers..) I was also a novice with trying to keep the speed constant
The plan was to fly into the wind then with it and average the 2 measurements. Anyway for what it's worth, below shows the climb and glide profiles off the GPS. A spreadsheet determined the results.
I could not finish the 45 MPH tests as the storm was closing in.. One conclusion is this aerie goes down almost as fast as it goes up
Today I worked out how to calibrate the ASI. First attempt is for 70 MPH, not exactly square and you can guess which direction the wind was coming from
I'm also not sure if 2 minutes a side is really long enough (AC90 talks about 2 miles)
practice... practice... :D

Hi Ian,
Definately a 'flyer that builds' and right now I'm just a flyer :D
Only snag so far is a slight oil leak around the fuel pump.. Will fix it this week.
You should be able to ID this airfield. even though you cannot see much of it..

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your comment
Its a STUNNING AC :D
With my limited experience I cannot compare to many AC's but it's certainly all (and more) I hoped it would be. Feels very strong, climbs like a homesick angel, input response is immediate, turns on a tickey, very easy to keep straight and level in a bit of rough, rudder control is great in the landing (always a crosswind at Bara), the stall is amazing, and now the experience at short landings etc is being built up, taking it all slowly and very cautiously though :D
Looking forward to flying further than 100Km soon ..
Plan to fly down to slummies next year, hopefully a few of us get together..
Have a good Christmas !
Cheers

Ian
Been a while since I have browsed this section so herewith a rather belated
CONGRATULATIONS
on both the completion of your build and the trophy!!
Here's wishing you many fun and safe flying hours. Maybe we will see you down at Light Flight (Cato area) soon.

Hi Wart, many thanks for your kind words, yep I intend to get all over, so Cato (Light Flight) is definately on the menu sometime.....
An update:
Final test flight with test pilot went well, could'nt (did'nt) pull more than +3.5 and -2 G's.
Submmited all paperwork and now have ATF :D
Then I was VERY lucky to secure a hangar for the Sav at Summit where my mates Andrew, Fritz and Callie fly out of .
Flew EMW in there this Am (first decent flying morning in what seemed like decades)
Quite sad to leave Bara though
there are some great people out there, and a great safe AF to conduct proving flights from but new AF much closer to home and slavecamp..
So here I am having a cuppa in the new hangar, relaxed in a chair Callie kindly "gave" me ....
Looking forward to many memorable flying hours
Cheers ian
