Yep, when I reach (what I think is) a milestone I like to do something else for a while...IFLYHI wrote:And
So I started making mock ups of the dash I want using masonite. ICP sent the outline DWG to John W, so I just produced the cut outs etc using TurboCad (If anyone wants the file your are welcome).
Below is the result, where the layout takes in my 250 hours experience driving a TBird.
What sits on top of the dash is a Garmin 296.
A close up of the centre (below)shows the MGL Eng monitor (saves the weight of 4 VDO's, plus a rev counter , and I get 2 * EGT's) and MGL's fuel flow which handles 2 sensors for diff calcs.
I chose the Icom as its a relaible no bull radio (not using it's intercom) with big displays which is perfect for guys like me that can see forever as long as its further than 2.5 feet away.
Then I added the best intercom I could find (PS Engineering) that has separate squelch controls (I will be flying with doors off sometimes and the co pilot drives me crazy when their mike breaks squelch) and it has external audio input for Ipod.
The rectangle cut out bottom right will be a cubby hole for charts etc.
Start with wing skins this weekend...
What have I missed ? Comments ?
Cheers

Hi Ian,
Cool man, I like it a lot...
I'm sure you've got a good reason, so I'll ask anycase, why the 2 maxi singles instead of 1 complete engine monitor ala skydat DX1 or MGL Stratomaster.
You'll save panel space and have more comprehensive info, How does 2 Maxi's compare to a single Stratomaster, and what were your reasons?
Just asking since I am far away from my panel and just getting some useful info from the guys gone before me.
Thanks,
Rudi

Yes, and thanks for the comments, I really value other's input.
Andrew is waiting for the new Stratomaster, but I guess its a personal preference.
Firstly I always get good service from MGL and they are local, then I like analogue Airspeed etc, and lastly I have the older 'smart singles' for engine and F Flow now and Im used to them, they are very practical.
If you list what you want to monitor on a 912 I think you would have to go for the larger Stratomaster which will certainly use up more real estate.
Below is my panel in the TBird whilst putting around the cabbage patch, which I find works well for me.
Cheers Ian
Just tell me when and i will be there. I am allways willing to be balast weight. Hopefully Flo will have my trike finished by Wednesday and then i can do some flying of my own aswell.
But give me a shout whenever you have an open space for me.

Its even too cold to work in the garage this evening, and considering I had my dose of cold last Sunday when we flew into Kitty Hawk for a nice breakfast... here is a brief update.
Spent a while deburring and washing the wing skins, made up of 3 main huge sheets .021 in thick, so handling with care is required...
After unwrapping the wing assy I ran the strobe cables, fixing them in a manner they would outlast the aerie ...
Below is the Right wing upside down with lower skin resting out of its final position, but shows one how thin the sheet is.
Now the lower skin is cleco'd in place with the front skin, hole is waiting for fuel tank, skin is ready to be pulled around the leading edge (next weekend)
Cheers Ian

Finished the Left wing, and it looks ok (hope the AP thinks so as well !)
Below is wing from Fuselage side, you can see the fuel pipe, tip strobe cable and hi tech fuel guage (which never lies)
Below is bottom side, fuel tank cover not riveted, waiting for AP inspection.
This pic shows the front spar connection with the 560Kg mods, plus a separate tie down bracket and inspection plate.
I made the wing tip nav light removable, fitted rivnuts with a
backing plate - extra weight for rivnuts and backing plate = 13Gms plus 130Gms for the light..
Tip complete less light , will fit after painting.
Cheers ian
