A trike is re born. ZU DBP

Postby Bundy » Tue Mar 27, 2012 6:58 am

Well chaps, hold onto your hats.... here we go!

Having made the decision to rebuild our plane, I thought I'd start a thread to take us (and you) through the process step by step. I think we are going to learn a hell of a lot through this process... there will undoubtedly be lots of swearing and frustration too! (**)

Just to remind you what we are dealing with... here is what DBP looks like now.
IMG_0825.JPG
The total rebuild will be from the ground up. We are going to make this trike as good as she was when she rolled off the factory floor, complete with new wing sail and propeller. She is just too pretty to chuck in the skip. xxx

Step 1: the Airframe, I think we have found a suitable candidate.... going to check it out on Wed (^^)

Anybody know a good "spray shop" in the Pta area? Will need to do some re spraying of schock covers, wheel spats and the pylon fairings etc.... We are also looking for a good low hour accident free wing structure from an Aquilla 2 (^^)

Nice I also have some serious learning to do when it comes to trike spares etc.

PS. Can you guys do most of the work and just get ano AP to sign off or must AP do it?

Best of luck!!!

Cheers
Ant

What's lekker about Microland is that we share the space with a resident AP. A lot we will do ourselves but we will always be working under the close supervision of Fanie and Hans. (^^) Right in the hanger next door. :)

All work done will be checked....and re checked. ##

We went to go look at an Aquilla 1 frame (everything from the hang block down) yesterday, unfortunately we decided not to buy it for various reasons. The search continues.... somewhere there is a decent frame with dust all over it looking for some TLC. Please let us know of any planes you may think are no longer being used. Send me their Reg No's please!

Only Aquilla's 1 or 2 please chaps.... remember, this is actually a restoration. If I can find enough 2nd hand spares we will build our own frame... have found quite a few allready lying in hangers all over.

Once you have rebuilt your trike and have a better understanding of the various connections and linkages, your pre flight checks will never be the same. They will be a whole lot more comprehensive.
Enjoy chaps. Everyone should do it at least once.

I would also like to know need to clean my trike's fuel tank as well...

I was thinking of rinsing it with water & sand for abrasion and then rinse all the sand out properly when done?

Check this out, they reccomend acetone: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=10804&p=111400&hil ... nk#p111400
