RALT

Postby Brad24 » Tue Mar 27, 2012 6:51 am

Hi Guys

In the process of designing a Radio Altimeter ( RALT ) for light aircraft as I think it would be a nice addition to any cockpit.

It works the same way as its very expensive commercially available sister for comercial airliners.
Basically this would be an audible altimeter aswell as visual for landing. Audible would be via a tone or synthesized voice giving you step by step altitude readings from 0 - 300ft above ground so when you do round out it will be at the perfect height. Accuracy of 10cm and very un-intrusive. All it will require is 2 small sensors attached to the under side of the aircraft preferably the undercariage and an extra instrument with a seven segment display, displaying the altitude.

Great for training in fix winged aircraft.

Let me know what you guys think?

Brad.

Well depending on price of course but as you say it is a nice addition to any cockpit. It will surely help the Duck as he cannot see the ground with his head stuck you know where....

Nice idea

Ya it can work on any aircraft. We are still in the testing phases of development but should not be long till finished. If there is allot of interest in the product we will start manufacture but at the moment we looking at around +/- R6500.00 complete. Trying to keep the cost as low as possible so the recreational guys like us can afford all the nice gadgets.

Awesome can't wait, rally hope this becomes a reality

Doesn't some GPS's have AGL indication built it? But I guess this would be more reliable/accurate?

PS. you'll probably need some integration into the trike's intercom system in the same way the airmagic system works with you cell/ipod?

Cheers

Yes your gps has a visual height but when landing you dont want to take your eyes off the prize at the last minute! We would intergrate it exactly the same way as to make it user freindly and to save costs on instalation. The last thing someone wants is to buy something for their aircraft and have to pay double just to install!

I think there are to few people designing new things and implementing new ideas that just have lineing their own pocket in mind. Why not build things rather for people to enjoy and not have to give up an arm and a leg for.

We will also be starting an electric drive train soon just waiting for the funding to come in.

From a customers perspective the panel mount consol, how would you want that to look? Digital seven segment display? Just audio? The way we like to design things is to have them customiseable to the end user.

My opinion is both.....audible and digital, some people listen better than looking, and others look better than listening

Wonderfull idea the audio call can be in numbers the gauge must be round and a needle where 0 is on the ground. If it is digital your brain has to do a conversion first and then paint the picture in your brain.

Keep playing

Thanks for all the ideas just helps to mould the product! Will be in the testing phases in a month and will keep you guys updated on the progress.

The only difficulty in this project is calculating the distance from a radio signal as this signal moves extremely fast and we are calculating short distances making the process calculations that need to take place run very quickly. Roughly looking at speeds of 233 000 000 times a second. Using a very fast processor.

Will keep you guys updated and if you have any future ideas or questions fire away!

Maybe you can have a RS232 output as well in which case it migth be possible to integrate with other instruments as well. The outout can be directly TTL levels and not RS232 levels which means it is not going to cost more, just 2 connection points.

Interesting! and what other instruments could it be intergrated to, and in which way?
