Double eagle microlight

Postby greg_m » Wed Feb 08, 2012 8:53 am

Hi Guys

I have recently found the website for the Double Eagle microlight and contacted the owner about plans/videos etc. He advises me that he has already supplied a number of sets of plans to SA persons but I cannot see a trace of a build log or even discussion on this type.

Is there anyone who has actually built this bird and flying it?

Would like to know before I make up my mind....

thanks, Greg

Hi Greg

I have looked at a set of plans for this and it is not a bad build.
I am not sure who has actually baought a set of plans but i am sure there must be one hidden in a barn/garage somewhere.

Dish - there are a couple of SA built options - in kit form though and secondhand options for ready built.

I am totally new to "microlights" so not just jumping at the first thing I see. Like you said though it is a great looking start point and I'm not really interested in "trikes".

Tailspin - thanks the info, wish there was a flying version out there though that I could go checkout and possible pay fuel/buy brekkie for a looksee and a ride :-)

You might as well also check this one out too. http://www.jordanlakeaero.com/duo.html

Looks exactly like the Airbike if you ask me. Pity airbike plans are not available anymore.

Not sure if any plans have been sold in SA yet but looks pretty good alternative to AB.

thanks bomskok... had a look but still under construction. I very much like the side by side seating of the DE over the tandem seating.

Came across the jdt AeroMax a day or 2 ago. They are operating from Tasmania since their US office is closing end of Feb. The AeroMax looks brilliant, all wood design with a covered fuselage, unlike the LE and airbike. Spoke to the guy in Tas (expat) but the problem is shipping costs. Something like $2000 to the US, maybe more to us? That is a quarter of the price of the kit. Insane. What puts me off the LE is the engine config. Not too crazy about the 'halwe volla' idea. Not even sure how well it will perform up here on the Rand.

bomskok - if you looking at microlight plans built then also have a look at the Piuma at the below link. It is wood construction, aluminium boom, t-tail enclosed pod and boom style pusher prop arrangement.

http://www.piumaproject.com/

The Double Eagle uses a standard 1835 VW motor with minor changes - the "halwe volla" is not big enough for the DE. Have managed to work out payment options with supplier now for a set of plans and videos. So I sit and wait for delivery. :)
