Rudi's KR2 ZS-WWN
Hi everyone
Thought I would start a thread on my new KR project. I build a KR1 and then a KR2 in the mid 90's. I sold both (to go sailing around the world) but bought the KR2 back a few years ago. It stood for almost 10 years in a container and when I finally unpacked it I was shocked to discover that the container leaked and wood-rot got to the spars and most of the wood work. After a lot of thought I finally decided that a fix would be a rebuild so the decision was made to rather scrap the plane.
Since then I have been looking for a nice unfinished KR2 project, well, I found it!
Meet ZS-WWN!
A few detail photos.
This KR2 has fixed tail dragger landing gear, my original had retracts, this is much more robust.
Look at that nice wing root fairing!
Still lots of work to do but all the major construction is done. My original KR2 was build with fiberglass over foam, lots and lots of sanding! This one has pre-molded cowling, front top deck, turtle deck, wing skins, wing tips, root and fin fairings, this all add up to a much smoother finish than I could get with all the sanding!
I need to decide on an engine, the plan was to put a 3300A 120hp Jabiru engine in my original KR2 but that engine has since found a new home. Options are the nice 80hp Aerovee, a BMW, or maybe a Jabiru again? I like the idea of building the Aerovee myself but would have liked a bit more power.
Will post updates as work progresses!
Fly safe,
Rudi

Yes, the Aerovee looks good, wonder how it would handle a turbo? I have spoken to a few owners in the US and they seem to be extremely happy with some having quite high hours without problems. I am rather tempted to make the KR2 VERY fast...... But the easy/cheap and safe option would be an Aerovee or 2200A Jabiru.
Thanks!
I also missed my KR.....

Yes, I had a look at them! BUT, I have also read about quite a few of them breaking cranks......mikeinPE wrote:This is what you want in your KR2:http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/corvair/.
The guy who's link you posted, Mark Langford, has broken 2......
That worries me a bit, a KR in glider mode is not such an exciting thought

Hey Rudi, is that the KR2, or KR2S?
It is a KR2, not the longer S.
Have you assembled your Aerovee?

From one of the links JS posted above....Hi, I converted this engine. Its a jabiru 2200 with my custom turbo setup. You can see it on a video if you check my profile. It puts out approx 125-135hp.

Last time he posted on the Jabiruengines mailing list, I think he had over 300 hours on that engine so far...RV4ker wrote:Eish...From one of the links JS posted above....Hi, I converted this engine. Interesting, sounds like it can last, now there would be an option for the "Ultimate air race" for under 500kg'sjustin.schoeman wrote:Last time he posted on the Jabiruengines mailing list, I think he had over 300 hours on that engine so far...RV4ker wrote:Eish...From one of the links JS posted above....Hi, I converted this engine. Re: Rudi's KR2 ZS-WWN
ZS-WWN will sleep in her new home tonight
She arrived at Rhino today courtesy of "Oldtimer", thanks Johan! I cannot wait to get started, the KR2 takes me back around 15 years, spent many great hours working on ZU-AMV back then. I have learned a lot in 15 years (I hope ) so I am hoping to do a few things better than the last time around.
Anyone out there with an Aerovee, Jabiru or O-200 engine they want to get rid of?
Fly safe,
Rudi

Yes, need to look at our setup, think I will make a point of putting in a few hours every Saturday like you do, then if I can do a few more hours on other days it is a bonus. The problem is how to fly less to build more?
