We are now busy rebuilding the plane. We decided to take the opportunity to convert her into a taildragger like the J43 CUB. We are lucky to have the support of Kobus Van Staaden (The founder of Cubby) and his son Manus who is assisting us with the rebuild in Secunda.

Here are some pics of the stripping down... Bad Cellphone pics...

After stripping the Cubby last weekend, Kobus and Manus finished off the welding/priming of the mainwheel brackets (moved forward for the tailwheel conversion). Hans and I then headed up this weekend to get to work on recovering the fuselage, under Kobus' supervision. The material is absolutely amazing! We where sceptical at first as to how loose it was when glued into place, but the initial 250degree iron tightens it right up. The process was: Glue fabric in place, iron glued setion at 250deg, iron rest of fabric at 250deg, reinforce sections with patches and Ceconyte pinking tape, iron again at 350deg and then begin Nitrate sealer.

Some pics from saturday...
'Steady Hand' Hans got to know the ways of the spraygun and added a few coats of Nitrate, then a few coats of Buytrate, then a few coats of Buytrate with the Ali-paste mixed in, while I stripped and started re-covering the vertical and horizontal stabilizers, elevators, trim tab and rudder.

You must be the first person on the planet with balls enough to convert a tricycle Cubby back to how it should be - a tail dragger!
I personally think that the tail dragger configuration looks much better than the tricycle, as just sitting on the ground it has the look of an aircraft that is waiting to fly. (nose pointing in the right direction an all that)
May I ask, do you guys have any hours on a tail wheel version of the Cubby?
Is this the aircraft that belonged to bluemancoops? If so, did he manage to sort out the engine misfire (see previous postings)
Where will your aircraft be based?
Good luck with your project and I hope you get to fly it again soon.
