Cobra with Toyota Yaris 1NZ motor :

Postby JACO » Wed Nov 11, 2009 2:39 am

Hi All

Yes, yes, it’s true, I’m the new owner of this “famous” little craft.
As you know, she came without an engine, so this will be my contribution towards the projects page : To find her a new engine, and get her up in the air ! :?

Me and my dad will be handling this one, and hopefully with the help of all the microlighters on this site, she will be flying soon. 8)

To the point : Rotax, yes well Rotax is probably one of or the best out there, but as you all know, the price is not one of or the best out there. I would settle for a 582, but the 912 is obviously a better choice, but alas, Price …..

I’ve been looking at Oupa G’s BMW project, and I must say, I’m impressed. I think this is a very good option if you’ve got 80 to 100k to spend. My budget is more in the region of 50k, so further we must explore ….. -0<

I’ve also been following Boet’s yaris project, and this one might fit my pocket better. :)

So come on all you clever “oukies”, what you think ….. ':-

HI Jaco

You can get a 2nd Hand BMW motor for about R18K - you can then put all the mods etc on for about R10/15K.
it will take alot of work but it is possible.
Have you thought about the HKS or one of those motors :?:

We've decided to go for the Toyota 1NZ Motor. As bought 86kg, stripped off all around the block 65kg. Almost a bit heavy, but it's got the power and we're light on passengers!
We're busy with the "Planning" stage of : inlet manifold thats restricting the Belt Drive that we're planning ; The exhaust branch ; Engine Mountings ; Electronics - Talking to the people of DICTATOR wich is very reliable and has altitude comp. for a very reasonable price. Now we need an Engine Dino Specialist near Pretoria.

Hi Jaco,
How are you going to go about the engine mountings ?
I am busy with a BMW 1200GS for the Quantum. Can we pool ideas ?
Will be this whole weekend at Aviators for the Gauteng Hang Gliding champs.
Give me a shout, or where are you ?

I personally prefer another management system but have a look yourself - www.perfectpower.com - also local and the prices are decent.
I have posted the contact of a company that has an engine dyno on boet's thread for you.

It is so wonderful when every body is playing experimenting. It is so good for aviation. In the end the whole fraternity gains

Hi Kloot,
I Plan to do a similar mounting on the engine as found on the Cobra using a Ratax. The black oval and tri angle on the photo will be the mounting points on that side. I am in Brits.

Thanks Stefan. I've tried that number several times, but the fax keeps answering, I faxed a request for them to phone me, but haven't heard from them yet. I will contact the people at Perfect Power, Thanks again.

You talking about DAW racing with the fax?. I'll see if I can get another number..
Ok here goes - speak to Greg - 0837005199 about the dyno. He is the man behind DAW racing.

Hi All :)
I Have since decided to get the engine tuned by using the prop pitch and thrust pulling power on a digital scale.
So whenever we reach the optimum pulling power at say 6000 rpm, the engine has developed its maximum power for the given asseccories fitted at that stage. Will also compare with other trike's thrust figures.
Will be using dual : Ignition, Dictator Fuel Management and VDO Fuel Pumps with no fuel returns.
I Have also looked at many possible reduction drive options and have decided on a reduction gearbox supplied by Aerotech Poland with a reduction ratio of 2.40 : 1.
I am also in contact with CAA to get the relevant Paperwork sorted - easier said than done.
Some points raised by the latter:
1. To get the process started, an “Application for approval of modification” (Form CA 43-14) will have to be submitted with a fee of R385.00
2. If the engine has been approved for fitment on the trike by the manufacturer of the trike, or if the manufacturer has no technical objection to the fitment of the engine, a letter should be obtained from the trike manufacturer stating so.
3. There will have to be substantiation (analysis/ FEM) to show that the airframe, engine mountings etc are compatible (sufficient) to support the new engine.
4. There may be other requirements that arise once the application has been reviewed. These will include installation instructions, a new operating manual, fitment of new equipment/gauges as required for the engine etc.
5. Once the above has been complied with, there will be a need for a vibration test for the engine as well a proving flight. Other tests will be requested at the discretion of the engineer handling the application.

So, Busy we will be for some time to come :!: :!:

"Will be using Dictator fuel management system and no fuel returns"
Sounds like decision made, you may like to consider the following:
1 No fuel return... After engine shutdown, the fuel lines may absorb "mad heat" from the engine and vaporise the fuel causing a vapour lock. If this happens, the engine will not restart. It doesn't require much heat to achieve this - in the region of 60 celsius.
Whilst flying, if the fuel sloshes around, the pump may take a small gulp of air which will probably create an air lock at which time the engine will go quiet and not make much power.
A small restricted return line to the tank will ensure that the above two conditions will never happen,
The Toyota Yaris does not use a return line to the tank because they don't want warm fuel returning to the tank thereby heating the fuel in the tank because cold fuel makes more power than warm fuel. They have taken other steps to prevent vapour and air locks which are not practical on your aircraft so a small return line is easy cheap insurance.
Perfect Power and Dictator make excellent reliable ECU's and in fact Chris has had excellent results racing his Cobra as an advertisment for his product but both of these units use a nemerical progression for programming which is a real bind and can be very confusing without a lot of practise. The GOTECH system on the other hand uses a bar graph graphical interface which makes programming for the part timer a breeze. It's colourful and you can tune each rev segment after only a few minutes familiarization. They are also very reliable - they have been flying in the Cubby's for some years now.
Use it - don't use it

Hi,
Thanks for your input. I Looked at Gotech's Web pages, will contact them tomorrow. On the fuel return issue, I will certainly look into it while doing numerous tests. Thanks again, any help / inputs are greatly appreciated!
I went to see Vladimir at Aerotrike today and he was very helpfull and keen on the whole project. Said he would help in any way possible and would like some feedback on the progress.
Thanks Vladimir! vhpy
We Got all our Engine Mountings and brackets back from Stress relieving and plating and will reassemble again soon. Most of our parts are in hand, but still waiting for the Gearbox from Poland. I will post some Pics as soon as the engine is hanging!
Cheers. :)
