Be carefull where you point that double walk hail gun of yours Boet. It's a lot easier to damage wings than a runway!

So boet is daai masjien daar.... Dis Donnerdag !

George I presume you are talking of a 912ULS when comparing price? I guess yours is cheaper because you bought it for a good 2ndhand price? (bit difficult to believe an new Rotec will be cheaper than a 912? )

Yip 110hp Rotec vs 100hp ULS RATTEX.
it all comes down to exchange rates. Rotec in U$D and RATTEX in Euro. Similar pricing, but R8:1 vs R11:E1 - that alone is 30+%.
New 7 cyl Rotec was around $13K last time I checked - shipping arund R20K +VAT = ±R150K roughly.
912ULS was in the R200+K bracket (R226 I think?), but I cant find online price now. Don't know if that include VAT and gearbox?

Disclaimer
Before I get grilled for running the Rattex down. It a quality engine and I have flown behind it plenty. I not saying the Rotec is better, but CAA shit (forcing O/H etc) and the HUGE exchage rate differences were a factor in my case... (Beancounter   )

Just seen 912 ULS price R166907.40 INCL. That a big reduction from earlier in the year IIRC... (^^) (^^) See the UL is only R10K cheaper? 914 is still   Extra R110K for a turbo seems a bit heavy.....

Again. not dissing the engine, just grumpy about the pricing, cuase I want a 912 trike.... puff

Interesting.... Thanks George - Amazing to think that its similar in price! vhpy

The beancounter thing applies to most if not all of us!

How does the mass of the rotec compare to 912ULS? and Fuel consumption? (we wont talk about oil   )

Agree Rotax is a class engine... there is a reaon why it is the LSA industry standard. Unfortionately is VERY expensive and thus its worthwhile to consider other options. And the ROTEC looks & presumably sounds like a REAL errie engine

And don't forget the 120hp Jab available for around R125k    It seems as the hp goes up, the price comes down!

Rotec is heavier IIRC and slightly thurstier. The oil is the price you pay for that SHWING when you hear it, although with the scavenge pump and drains I am told it only marks it's teritory if threatenend....

Thanks George!

Justin I must be honest that my confidence in Jabiru has been knocked a bit after Larry's experience on his Waiex :( .

My brother is an instructor at a school where J160's are used and they have had LOADS of problems with the Jabbie engines - including major failures. He is of the opinion that its a combimation of less than ideal cooling (rear cylinders often run hot in prolonged climb) and small oil sumps ( I think the 2200 only has about 2.5l of oil). I suppose that a flightschool environment also adds its own set of stresses on engines

But then again there are many Jabiru planes & engines flying around so perhaps these are isolated cases? :?

Sorry for the hijack guys

Oom Boet is daai masjien al daar??
