Tailspin, I am learning all the time and I think a non certified aircraft should be as safe as a certified aircraft any way. Why not galvaniseren (I only know the Dutch word) it will not rust and I think the process is well know.

Raw Linceed much cheaper and easyer to get hold of i think.
I have recently redone the struts for my VP and when i cut them open they were still fine inside and they have been in a store room for over 5 years so it does work.

Yes it works, but the question is would it be bettet to have galvanized and what would be the extra cost if any? Accept for the cost would there be adownsite?

Re: Building the new Bushbaby SAFARI
I don't think galvanizing would protect the tubes from the inside like the oil. On the outside it would do a good job but remember you have to do it after the welding for best effect, also remember that not all forms of galvanizing are equally good, "Hot dip galvanizing" works great but might not be that easy with full frame !johnsa wrote:Yes it works, but the question is would it be bettet to have galvanized and what would be the extra cost if any? My Pietenpol has oil in the tubes and a good epoxy paint on the outside, will tell you in a few years how well it worked

Fly safe,

Re: Building the new Bushbaby SAFARI
Boet I can't wait to fetch the Bos Ott we have a problem withe second airframe the paint shop. The engine mount is finished and I will bring it this weekend on my way to Tankwa small detour.
There is a lot of talking on the mild steel. To start of the airframe is TIG welded this gives an airframe that is hermetically sealed. The prewar airframes were gas welded with a certain amount of porosity. Hence rust. Your mild steel Fridge washing machine etc are powder coated
and rust is not a problem. Abeadblasted airframe then powder coated does not get corrosion from the outside. Galvinizing electrolitic can change the cristal struture of the metal there are the famous chrome plated flying wires that snapped also even hot dip zincplating ruins the airframe you can never repair it any welding gets welds that are contaminated. Iknow that the bosvarkie will outlive me. We musn't try and fix something that isn't a problem. Just remember the french saying"better is the enemy of good"

Well roared, oh Lion. Words of wisdom that came thru experience.

Re: Building the new Bushbaby SAFARI
On top of it if you hot dip the airframe it will come out of the bath like a koeksister one also has to drill a zillion holes for the zinc to go inside actually a bit of a "kak" idea.
