Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
If the response to this engine is anything to go by, there is a definate NEED for an alternative 4-stroke powerplant on the SA market. I receive calls nearly on a daily basis about the progress on this engine project. Oupa G gives great support, and as the big man has walked down this road before, I take his advice. (Stupid man learn from own mistakes. Wise man learn from other man`s mistakes!) Niel in Kroonstad is working on the belt reduction system. I have decided to go for a 3.47:1 reduction ratio. Same as the 912`s. That way it will be much easier to compare the final figures. The wiring system is VERY complicated looking, but I am on a FAST learning curve with that. As things stand at the moment, I need a bit of both: time and mula, to keep this project ticking over.

Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
The response you get on these pages probably represent only a fraction of all those who are interested in alternatives to Brand X. I can see no reason why you shouldn't be able to establish a business exporting this and/or other conversions on the world market. You may or may not be aware of a Yamaha snowmobile engine conversion flying in a gyro in the US of A, as well as one in the works in Norway. However, a car engine does provide for better availability all over, not only in the RSA. I look forward to seeing you making your magic with the Yaris engine.
Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
Something about brand X, that I do not understand. A 2 stroke 65hp variant, including it`s E gearbox, in OZ, converted to ZA Rand, will cost you +_ R46k. Why the BIG difference? SA is also a LOT closer to Austria........
Anyway. Please let us not go there. Back to my Yaris engine. I notice in the new "Huisgenoot" they road-tested the Peugot 107. It`s petrol tank holds ONLY 35 liters, but this little marvel gives up to 600km on a tank!! Now you all probably wonder what that has to do with a TOYOTA engine. Everything, for both the Citroen C1 and the Peugot 107 share EXACTLY the same engine as the Yaris. In fact, my Yaris engine was removed from a C1 that had a side-on disagreement with something heavier and bigger. Badge engineering at it`s best.....

Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
As part of the silent majoriy who have been following this adventure closely, I would like to add my voice to the growing chorus of praise-singers.
Thanks Boet, Oupa-G and any others helping who are on the side of budget aviation. We are forever in your debt.
The fact that this engine is so widely used by many manufacturers means that plenty will be available far into the future. And, from what it sounds like, the slight weight penalty over brand X can be offset by reduced fuel load. Once the ideal reduction ratio has been established, perhaps someone can produce a gearbox.....
I would dearly love to give my time to helping with the grunt work of the development - but I lack the 'kahunas' to take time away from my own business.
Which brings us to money - Is there room to suggest that interested parties might contribute in some way towards the development? Please tell us.

Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
Hi Boet
Had a chat with a friend of mine re. your project. He mentions that even though the engine used is the same core wise... you have to be weary of the way each individual manufacturer manages timing pickups and sensing (Some off the crank and others off the flywheel for example)
An after market programmable management system would be in the region of R 4000 to R 5000.
If you wish to have a chat with him pop me a pm and I'll refer you to him. I must say he does dabble in the performance side of engines and installs such management systems. Could be able to assist you albeit with a little advice?

Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
Thanks for your interest in my project, and yes, please I would like to make contact with as many experts as I can!!

Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
Hi Boet, I too am watching this project with keen interest and have corresponded with you via PM before in this regard. I share the sentiments of Petrodactyl that cost should not be an issue here for such an important development. I certainly will support an initiative to assist with the Research and Development of this project as I am sure many others will too. If you are keen we can all contribute equal amounts to make it fair and would posibly have an option later on the production model when they are rolled out. We can formulate a list of interested parties and you can determine how much costs are required to complete the project, this could be done on this forum or via PM. I am sure many people will be just as eager to assist as I think we are all like kids waiting for Christmas to see this project get off the ground. With your vast technical knowledge and a bit of financial backing, who knows how big this one is going to get??

Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
Thanks John, I have contact with the electronic ign outjie. He seems keen to help. As far as help with funds goes, thanks, it is a noble thought, but I would like to do this one my way. With limited financial means, on a shoestring budget, and prove to people just how affordable flying can still be made. So you can buy a BB Explorer kit from me, about 130k, AND fit a Toyota engine, instrument and radio, assemble it yourself AND have it up and flying for less than R200k. Makes you think, does`nt it ?? Let`s all hope that everything will keep on going right!

Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
Hi Boet, just a thought to help, but fully understand your drive to tackle this one on your own - your way. We all wait in anticipation for your success on this project - man it would be sweet to have an great aerie, built by a master with a cool not so thirsty engine for under 200k. You will be swamped with orders for sure. Best of luck on the testing and getting the motor's electrics sorted. As they say on an advert on SABC "and now we wait"

VOORSPOED

Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
Thanks guys. This engine puts out around 80 hp, with some changes. I have been informed to scrap the original ECU, for something mapped for more power. Redrive ratio will be 2.43:1. I plan on using a 3 blade, 70 -72" ground adjustable "Aero-Prop". I am not a very scientiffically-minded person, more like a "Broek se gat engineer" type. IE, I have a "feel" for things mechanical, developed over years of fiddling about in things mechanical. So do not expect me to become cleverly complicated on this tread, I am still learning new things. As it stands now, I am waiting for my ship to dock, before I can do much.

Nuts about Cheetahs. Petit is the place.
Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
Mmmm. and all the time we have the experts right here in the Fairest. All that remains now will be to chase the softness out on prostitution and moering the spaarvarkie stukkend, for some mulah, and this project is moving on. Going the "Unichip" way, retaining the original ECU. I will not bugger around too much with it, otherwise reliability will suffer.

Re: TOYOTA YARIS ENGINE
So today I SOLD the 3 cylinder Yaris engine. I have decided to go the 2009 1300 Corolla engine route. In standard road trim, as it sits in the roadcar, it puts out 99.999999999 horsepower, which puts it close enough to 100 ponies for my liking. I do not mind the extra couple of kilos, and understand that it is not THAT much heavier than the 3 cyl. I know this is a bit of a bummer to you guys, but I do need a bit more power. I can fit the 1300 corolla motor as is, with NO modifications exept the prop redrive system. THAT is just what the DR ordered.
