Building the new Cubby Renegade
We have long wanted to create that really nice home grown Cub iteration that ticks most of the boxes for most folks (it is not possible to tick all the boxes for all the pilots). The Cubby Renegade has a lot of small differences to the original Cubby with the VW derived engine, which was solo flown from the rear seat. It shares a lot with the Cubby MK2, but still has a fair amount of differences to set it aside as a different model.
The Renegade has an electro-mechanichal jackscrew to fully adjust the horizontal stabilizer up and down for trim, it has single slotted flaps, and a baggage door on the RH side of the fuselage for loading baggage. It has a "half door" on the left side of the cockpit opening upwards under the left wing, the entry door on the right is much bigger than the original Cubby. The front cockpit easily accommodates pilots of 6ft5 . It is solo flown from the front seat.
There are a variety of engine options which can be fitted. Rotax 9 series,Jabiru 6cyl, UL Power, and Revmaster.
The Renegade we will use for this thread is fitted with a UL Power 350i of 120hp. It is a flat 4 aircooled direct drive engine.
We hope you will enjoy the build with us.

Re: Building the new Cubby Renegade
So today we started on a bit of a rework of the rear passenger`s rudder pedals position. This is in order to give a better seat "feel" to the now front seat pilot. As the old Cubby was a rear seat solo aircraft the rear occupant had to have the best seat, so to speak, but now the boot is on the other foot....( or is it Butt on the other seat...) , so the front seat has now got to be the best seat :D Once we are done playing , I will post some photos of our endeavours. The brakes will also be changed from heel-brakes to-toe brakes, with the master cylinders on the front rudder pedals , connected to the toe-brakes.

Re: Building the new Cubby Renegade
Here are some photos to show what exactly we have been up to with this Renegade frame. Basically it is a couple of ergonomic changes to improve pilot comfort. The two "test dummies" are both over 6 foot tall. Joos, the burly one in the front seat is 6ft 2, and Pierre the more slender one in the rear seat is 6ft 1, and has a size 10 shoe, note the position of his feet.
1) The instrument panel has been moved foreward, now tall pilots have more "knee room".
2) The position of the rear occupant`s rudder pedals have been moved away from next to the legs of the front occupant.
3) Toe brakes will be used for both front and rear .
4) The door frame has been made bigger to the front to facilitate those pilots with less "bendy" joints.
5) The front seat frame also got a bit of an adjustment, notice the good headroom for those "grain fed South Africans"

Re: Building the new Cubby Renegade
The Cubby Maverick frame is done welded, we finished painting the frame today. Next week we will start the Renegade and Maverick builds alongside each other, and take "time lapse" photos as we progress.
