Microlight and Light Sport Airfields in Southern Africa

Postby alanmack » Tue Apr 27, 2010 1:05 pm

The MISASA Communications portfolio has launched a new project to document and communicate useful information on Southern African Microlight and Light Sport Airfields

Are you planning a trip to have a holiday on Free State farms, fish in Mozambique, have a braai at Malagas on the Breede River, or just chill out in Namibia, Swaziland, Botswana, Van Reenen, Barbeton, Wild Coast, Mosselbay, up the west coast etc. If so, you have access to may books and other information but there is little information readily available on the lesser known regions that microlight and light sport aviation pilots can enjoy.

MISASA has embarked upon gathering information for those seeking an AVIATION MEANDER to lesser known parts of Southern Africa. Technology often enables enhancements and MISASA has embarked upon a project to update information on Microlight and Light Sport Aircraft Airfield destinations in Southern Africa. We encourage clubs and owners of private airfields and emergency airstrips to:

* provide us with information on local support services including hospitality services eg accommodation, transport (taxi & other) service providers, fuel arrangement possibilities and any other useful information to pilots that may happen to need the airfield and or who may plan an air tour of lesser known parts of South Africa and other Southern African countries.
* provide us with airfield circuit and approach information, including pictures, and flight path tracks. The latter can be downloaded from GPS tracks that overlay maps and or they can be obtained with data loggers. Should an airfield owner not have access to a GPS with this capability MISASA will lend you a data logger to fly your circuits and approach patterns with. Upon the return of the data logger we will download the information and flight path with Google map overlay and provide the aerial photos on the MISASA website.
* The project is being run on behalf of MISASA by Diederik (Dirk) Bouckaert and you can eMail him at dirk@sungazer-paradise.co.za or you can phone him on +27 (00 83 3668481
* You can also contact any MISASA Committee Member to arrange for the loan of a data logger if you need one.

We thank Dirk for his willingness to run this project and hope that many more members will offer to assist Dirk in gathering information in their regions as well as by passing this information on to airfield owners in other countries.

PS - Why not start by eMailing Dirk pictures of the airfields that you have pictures of!
PPS - Hotels, B&B farms, breakfast venues with a fetch and carry service from a local airfield and others are welcome.

Simple question, Is this not a duplication of the Jan Coetzee book "Microlight Fields of South Africa" which was very good.

Hi,

This is not a commercial venture. We would be happy for all to use the information in the process of updating available websites, books etc. The point of departure is that many offer co ordinates etc but --- try and find out who will fetch you at a "small town" airstrip for fuel, accommodation etc. So, far we have had one B& B respond and no members offer to gather info.

I'd rather feed demand than create it! Especially if not needed!

Fly safe,
