INFO / RECOMMENDATIONS ON FLIGHT TO CAPE TOWN VIA WEST COAST

Postby johnht » Sun Feb 01, 2009 12:42 pm

Hi Members

I am planning to undertake a trip from Jhb to CPT in the near future and would like to route via the West Coast (I'm not looking for the shortest but rather a scenic route!). I will be one-up in my MT03 and, as such, can carry a bit of extra fuel.
So far I'm comfortable getting to Alexander Bay, but it's from there that I really need some suggestions on a suitable route, taking re-fuelling, air fields and air spaces into account. I'm thinking of stopping at Morning Star for a couple of days while spending time with family nearby, prior to returning - again here I'll need some advice on possible hangarage , etc.
Any assistance and positive advise will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks
John

Morning Star I clp you with,

do you want to route all along the coast? I can get you contacts at Lamberts Bay, Saldanha and Morning Star.

What is your tank range?

Hi Morph

Thanks for the assistance.

Would like to route coast-wise as this should provide good specatcle value (I'm not in any hurry)!

I have ~70litre tank + 20l extra giving about 4,5 - 5hrs (no reserve).

Will be most grateful for any info / contacts along the way.

Regards
John

Here is a Google Earth kmz file with the airfields along the coast, and the significant ones inland. Where I have contacts I will give them

Alexander bay -
Springbok - Established tar runway, should get Avgas and maybe mogas there
Koingnaas -
Vredendal - There are two, this one the microlight/club field and a tar one north of the town. I don't have a contact, but they usually have a number yo can call on the clubhouse and they send out a taxi.
Doringbaai - no contacts just in case you need an alternative to Lamberts bay
Lamberts Bay - Riaan - 083 6threezero wunthree59
Nooitgedagcht - Gerhard - 083 too85 6dubblethree7 - The owner is a guy called Johan, Gerhard can put you in touch with him
Cassie's Place - Cassie 082 3wun6 3210
Langebaanweg - 122.5 don't land there serious airforce base
Saldanha - Johan Froneman 082 for5seven 9509
Moreesberg - right next to the town you can just land there and send someone for fuel
Boland - tar runway, never landed there, busy cropspraying field
Delta 200 - Mark Bellingham 082 5sevenwun 31dubblefife
Morning Star - Me oh ate3 two36 fifewun53

then in case you hit mist and need a diversion
Fisantekraal - Louis Van Wyk 083 675 35forwun
Wintervogel - Tobie 0218802719

Airspace wise refer to the pic. It gives two routes, one via the coast, and one following the N7 if you get mist

The whole northern sector is on 124.8 below 1500ft agl. Above that Cape Town Information 126.5

Coastal route.
A. At Lamberts bay you enter FAD46 (below1500ft) and FAR 45 "A"(above 1500ft agl). Both of these require you speak to Langebaan Weg 122.5
B. Within 3nm of Saldanha call Langebaan and tell them you are changing to 122.7(Saldanha) then broadcast for Saldanha 122.7 (uncontrolled but can be busy)
on the way out change back to 122.5, and request clearance for Morning Star. Route over Langebaan and stay east of the lagoon. Don't fly over the islands on the west of the lagoon. They are military.
C. at the Southern end of lagoon, call 122.5 outbound and change freq to 124.8 (<1500agl) or stay on 122.5 if above 1500ft agl. From here you can hug the coast
D. On the coast there will be a rocky outcrop we call Bokpunt, ahead of you will be Koeberg Nuclear Power Station. If you are west of the R27, 125.8 remain below 2000ft. The Mamre RD will join the R27 on the left. To the left of the R27, FAD 200, 124.4. Be careful of Delta 200 airfield. This is a skydiving airfield and is quite close to the R27 and there are always meat bombs dropping out of the sky. I suggest you hug the R27 until abeam Koeberg and then follow the Powerlines in to Morning Star.

The N7 route.
This would follow from Vredendal to Clanwilliam, Nooightgedagcht, over the klippe and Cassies place, Piketberg, Moreesberg, Malmesbury and Morning Star
a. At Clanwilliam you enter FAR 45 "A". Below 1500ft agl 124.8, above 122.5 Langebaanweg
At Moreesburg you enter FAR 45 "B". below 1500ft 124.8, above 1500ft and below FL120 126.5 Cape Town information. Above FL120 122.5
b. Here you cross into the FAD200, 4000ft and below 124.4. If you prefer to route to the east of Malmesbury then you enter TMA "B" and you MUST remain below 4500ft, 124.8
c. Crossing over the N7 takes you into TMA "B" 4500ft max or "A" 2000ft max. 124.8

Morning Star, All circuits to the east of the N7, 02/20, 200ft AMSL, 650m, tar. Tall blue gum trees on both approaches
