Hi everyone,

Louis van Wyk will be hosting an informal gyro fly-in at Fisantekraal this coming Saturday morning (19th)
It's really just a social get-together and a chance for some of his students to meet a couple of the local gyronuts.
Everyone is welcome and there will be a braai so don't forget to bring a dop & chop!

:D

Gyro Day at FAFK / Aero Sport

Saturday arrived, accompanied with a brisk, windsock-filling South-Easter so typical of the Cape Summer. With a cloudless blue sky above, the trike pilots must have looked on with some envy as gyro after gyro joined the circuit to land on runway 23 at Fisantekraal airfield. If there is one major benefit of flying a gyro in Cape Town, it’s the fact that our prevailing “Cape Doctor’ seldom succeeds in keeping us confined to hangar-rest! Thus the gyro fly-in day hosted by Aero Sport presented another perfect excuse for a gyro get-together, with Louis and Hannie van Wyk welcoming pilots from as far a field as Gansbaai.
The turn out was excellent, with the ten gyros accounting for almost the entire compliment in the Western Cape, all of which made for a nice cross-section of Magni, Ela, Sycamore and RAF gyro types. From a social perspective, the gyro day provided a wonderful opportunity to introduce new student pilots to the local gyro community, and to also extend warm welcomes to Eric Torr (who is providing instruction at Aero Sport on behalf of Louis), and David & Sussan who have (very sensibly we think) relocated to the Cape, along with their magnificent looking Ela-08.
Len Klopper, as part of his instructor training, gave a well-structured and most informative presentation on the Principles of Flight to the assembled pilots, which included some wonderful historical footage relating to early gyroplane development and the pioneering achievements of Amelia Earhart, who set the women’s world altitude record in 1931, achieving 18,415 feet in a Pitcairn PCA-2 gyroplane!

The gyro day was well supported and enjoyed by all. So much so, that there is already talk of another in the not too distant future. A well-deserved thank-you must go to Louis and Hannie from Aero Sport Cape Town for not only arranging and hosting the fly-in, but for also generously providing the boerewors-rolls for lunch!
