Forgive my ignorance but I assume the Hass unit is for someone who is hearing impaired? I don't think I need it yet but with the bad sound quality in my open Gyro I will be needing it soon.

This is also a trainer so it has different people in it several times a day. I dont think form-fitted earphones will work but perhaps standard in-ear phones will work better?

I have replaced the radio, replaced the headphones, had the wiring re-done and properly shielded and grounded and STILL its lousy. What next?
Len, the hass units are not hearing aid... they are hearing protection used in the mining industry. The speakers inside are just a bonus, so basically Paul has been busy getting the setup so you can plug the hass units into the circuit to get comms.
The hass units are supposed to block out the noise almost 100%. That way you will hear much better and in the mean time also save your ears...
Now Pauls headphones and mics are set up so you get the minimum wind and enjine noise feedback through the mics.
So if all this is put together, we just might have a very good sollution for open gyros.
So, the the standard inear phones will probably work, but only to deliver sound to the ear. They probably will not help much to help block out outside noise...

Finished product with Hass units connected underneath. If the Hass units are connected the inner speakers disconnect, then the ear cup becomes a ear defender. The Hass unit also acts as ear defender. Now if that doesnt work.. The headsets are driven by a seperate noise filtering system which is driven by the intercom. So the VOX system will still function. Each system will require the internal mic amplifier to be adjusted..

I did receive the headsets from Paul. Thanx Paul
Workmanship and Quality is outstanding.
Here are some pics of the system fitted on my head.
All seems good so far. The hass plugs are super comfortable because they are custom made to fit my ears.
They are amazing. Sound dampening from the outside is absolutely amazing.
I can only imagine the sound to be nothing but crystal clear. Combined with the low noise mic and Pauls full face helmet to keep the wind of the mic, this just might be a winner....
I cant wait to test them in real life. Just waiting delivery of my gyro and will post again...
My first observation.... If this works, it might become the new industry standard for open cockpit and helicopter flying.

Thanks Jans, just a few points, i would NOT advise this for trikes or closed cockpits at all. They are a double ear defender. The Hass unit alone would work in a trike with a helmet very similar to the Icarus. This is not capable of fitting a ear cup inside. Besides Gyros, this headset would be very effective in a machine similar to a Bantam that has the 6 cylinder Jabiru motor or similar type environment. They are ready for production now as I am very satisfied with the unit. They will be coated in either Iron age, Olive drab or Desert storm colours used in our military projects. This reduces passive noise.

Price excluding Hass units is R2,250.00. At this stage either a twin jack or binder 6 pin used in some machines.

Jans will post the details how to arrange the Hass units. We will need posting to us.

Ok, so the gyro finally arrived so I was able to put this project to the test.
After flying two hours I can only say: They work fantastic.
Off the bat everything worked just fine.
Pauls headsets are just fine with the Filser ATR 500. No problems at all.
We needed to adjust the mic gain a little so the mic is not as sensitive.

Radio comms: As good as I ever experienced in any aeroplane... Its better than enclosed cockpit helicopter...

Pax comms: crystal clear. The enjine noise through the mic is almost like a misquito in the backround.

This system in my mind: Absolutely brilliant.
I would recommend them without hesitation.
I do think it will be just fine without the hass noise ban earplugs, but if you really want it all, they are a must!!
Paul, congratulations. These headsets surpassed all my expectations. For a first try, I would say you definitely know what you are doing!!

Thanks Jans, comments are much appreciated. I have asked Hass to register on the forum, this way they can answer questions, post new toy updates and generally provide a technical back up of devices, availability and other details as well as details of specialists to take impressions and locations.

Janice, (from Hass) this link is copied to you by email, please take the opportunity of advising this forum of the products and solutions that are available. I appreciate its a new market but its now proven to perform...

Many thanks Paul

I did another 2 hour flight today.
Absolutly amazing!
Radio comms are like you are using a telephone... only much more clear.
I am amazed at the sound quality I get and the quietness of the flight.

The hass noise ban in my opinion is a must. The double system works like a charm.
Paul, I think you have a winner!!
The filser squels are only set to 5. It can still go up to 10.
The mic gain is turned up about a quarter of a turn from fully closed.

The vox is perfect. It only activates when talking. No wind noise, no enjine noise when talking to pax. And the wind noise and enjine noise don't open the vox. It stays shut and only opens when we talk....
Absolute peace while flying and no stress because you cannot hear the radio.

The volume on the headset is barely open. Only about 1/4 turn. It can still go a lot harder, but no need.

What else can I say.... I wish I had this 10 years ago when I started flying. It would have saved me a lot of frustration and money!!!

Ok, I'm sold. Will be ordering a set tomorrow.

I think I will have to settle for the set without the HASS since I dont think its practical in a flight school machine.

Len, I think it will be practical especially for instructors....
The student in front can just use the standard headset without the hass plugs. Each headset has its own volume control, so once your intercom and vox is set up, there is no more adjustment needed. You can leave it as be. Just turn volumes down or up on the headsets.
I think the system works together as a whole to achieve the best results. Pauls mics are brilliant at filtering out enjine and wind noise coming in through the mic, but the standard earcups just don't do it for keeping out the noise coming from outside. No matter how good they are, they just are not enough.
Especially you guys who sit in the gyro all day long, will save you ears in the long run and also much less fatigue because of the high noise environment.
I tested without the hass plugs and there is a huge difference. As I said earlier, the earplug keeps the noise outside your ear and then also delivers the sound straight into your ear.
Because its so quiet, you don't have to use a lot of volume either. That's also a saving on the ears. I have found that I had to keep on increasing the radio and intercom volumes to be able to hear above the noise, but with the noise ban earplugs, its pure bliss.
I would not not go without them ever again.
Ps. I also ordered Pauls helmet. They are very light compared to the David Clark I used to have. The full face visor is a winner. It also helps a lot to keep the wind off the mics. Especially the back one.

Jans and Len, i have had a good think about this, the standard unit with the Hass unit, dont change. I do suggest as a instructor in the back seat it does make sense. But for the student pilot and lets call it "General purpose" usage. I make the same cocktail but use the super high performance ear defenders from Peltor. These are bulky but fit the Condor helmet quite fine. They have a double ear defender section in the cups. Rated as the best passive ear defender available. See Peltor Optime 3 units....

Hi Zulu1,

I find strange that you have the time to post quite a few times recently on this forum and you do not have the time ever to return a single call, after the many messages left verbally with your staff and family. It is very nice to go for new sales, but what about service of existing clients ?
I have been grounded for the past 3 weeks with radio problems and tried in vain to contact you. As I don't fly from a dorp, a good radio system is an important security item in my aircraft. It worked well for 3 years until I developed various problems that I wanted to bounce off you, as you were the supplier.
In the end, as I realised that you might be out of business, I had to take the bull by the horns and this past week-end, I removed all items that you supplied me and had to purchase a complete set of antenna, radio and intercom form your competitor. All problems resolved !
Thanks again for your good service Paul !
