Something Different!

Hi All
I would like to share a truly amazing experience with you. On Saturday morning I arrived at Pearly Beach AF to let my rotors chop some air and there was this beautiful little red aircraft tethered to the parking blocks. On closer inspection I saw RV7 on it. I have heard about and seen some RVs, but never took much notice of them. Only thing I knew about them was that they are pretty fast aircraft. After a while the owner, Martin Fenn, pitched up with Mauritz & Christiaan (two of our local pilots) to take Mauritz for an aerobatics sortie. Martin graciously offered me a flip as well. This was all new to me – parachute strapped on and emergency procedures explained, off we went – just about 100m takeoff roll! Martin showed me rolls, loops, snaps, slow speed/high speed performance and there I sat – thrilled and truly amazed. What an aerie! Martin then offered me the stick. I played around a bit and did some steep turns and was amazed at how smooth and powerful she was. I asked Martin if I could try a roll… No problem – he demonstrated and then I had a go. Nose up, 140 knots, aileron all the way left and over she goes – Wow Wow Wow!!! Indescribably smooth! Did a few more and then asked if I could try a loop… (me now doing the Oliver Twist thing). Again – demonstration – and then me - nose down, 160 knots and then stick well back – the earth starts sliding back underneath me – blue sky up – approaching a wisp of a cloud then through it – shudder, shudder at the top and Martin quickly fixes the situation – was onset of stall – I had pulled the stick too far back. Try again. This time it works nicely (in my eyes at least) and craning my head back at the top of the loop I see mother earth slipping sweetly back into position. Awesome! Martin also demonstrated slow speed at 100kts – fuel consumption 17 l/h. At 170 kts, consumption is 28 l/h – equates to: CTN to JHB 3,5h & 100 liters fuel – much less than I will use in the gyro from Pearly to Carnavon by the end of the month! To me it seems that the RV7 offers an extremely versatile and economic package. Thanks again Martin for having the balls to really show me what makes you RV guys tick!
