SATURDAY 12th NOVEMBER 2011
Hi Guys,
That time of the year again. Wings Parade for the Young Falcons is scheduled for Saturday 12th November.
Same procedure as the previous years, namely
1. Safety briefing on Wednesday 9th November at 6pm at the Young Falcons Aviation Academy, on the base.
2. Saturday 12th all aircraft to be landed by 08:00 if possible (yes I can hear you chuckling . . . . . )
3. 8:30 to 12:00 flips for the Young Falcons and Instructors
4. 12:30 Presentation of Wings and Certificates
5. Please join us for lunch
Attached are the two forms, in Word and PDF formats, I need faxed back to me at 086 616 0755, no change from last year thankfully. Deadline this year is Friday 4th November.
As far as AVGAS is concerned, I have asked BP to help us again - awaiting their reply.
Please feel free to invite friends who have not participated before - they are most welcome. We are limited to 25 aircraft this year . . . . . . . . .
Please see a bit of background below my signature block if you are new to this list.
Best wishes,
Bob Corbett

Thanks for expressing your interest in our little project.
Quick background so what we are doing makes sense; The SAAF have a youth awareness program called Siyandiza (We are Flying) that concentrates on all school children throughout the country. The Young Falcons is a component thereof concentrating on 30 Grade 10 pupils per year on each Air Force Base, on a two year course closely resembling a PPL in structure plus some formative training (disciple, drill, etiquette, first-aid, conflict resolution etc etc). That equates to 60 kids on course at a time.
They are demographically selected from the Western Cape (not SA) so we have 20% whites, 20% blacks, 10% Indian and 50% coloureds approximately in the group. They also have to be doing at least maths at school. WE do not concentrate on previously disadvantaged kids nearly as much as we do concentrate on presently disadvantaged kids. There are some really bright ones in the group.
We have been going for 8 years and are seeing the results at last. It has been tight at times and the learning curves have been steep. The "we" I am referring to is the local chapter of the Association of Virtual Aviators called Cape Virtual (Chapter 13 of the Aero Club SA). We facilitate the Young Falcons course with the SAAF supplying the personnel for the lectures and Cape Virtual supplying the Flight Simulation component thereof.
The kids just soak up any information that we supply and some of them live for it. When I originally wrote this, a mother was chatting with me on Skype and this is a excerpt from that "trust me, the falcon's is the best thing to happen to Anthea, it's motivated her better than anything else to do well at school" and then just when I had well and truly "had it" with the SAAF just recently, a mother of one of our star black guys, dressed in her Sunday best, took my hand in both hers and thanked me for giving her son "direction, keeping him off the street, out of crime and drugs," in that order. Talk about a re-motivating moment .....
Since I wrote the above some 4 years ago, both Anthea and Aphelele have been selected for SAAF pilots course.
Anyway .... Saturday 12th November is when we have our Annual Wings Parade and award Young Falcon Wings to the Advanced Young Falcons. We invite the press, the kid's parents and siblings, Teachers, Cape Virtual members and the personnel from the base that have been involved during the year. Previously it was just a tour of the facilities followed by a presentation. Five years ago, we thought to lift the bar a bit and Di Ellis's (NASA - of Springbok air show fame) idea of flying the kids early that morning in micro-lights has spurred us on so much that this thing has grown into a fantastic annual event.
I have, in principle at this stage, permission for you and your fellow pilots to land and operate in Ysterplaat's airspace on the 12th . Landing fees (a new development in the SAAF these days) will be taken care of by Cape Virtual (If you are feeling flush, a donation would obviously come in handy of course). BP Air is hopefully supplying Avgas and the SAAF have offered pumps and ladders etc and will be supplying the coffee break and lunch.
The basic idea is for the micro-lights and light aircraft to arrive at sparrows and get as many kids as possible flown before it gets bumpy. The control tower is happy to oversee the issue and we have been able to organise use of the Fire Station (very close to Rwy 02) as our base. I have permission for you to fly the kids and some of my Cape Virtual instructors; indemnities will all be on file, at the venue. Tea time at 10ish, a bussed tour of the Young Falcons Aviation Academy and then the Wings Presentation 12:30 and lunch. Should all be over by 1pm. Obviously all the guys that fly in are invited to the wings presentation and lunch. That is the basic plan.
