Hi, can someone give me an idea of the running cost of a Gyro? MT, ELA or Magni.

I am busy justifying the purchase of one.

Advise will be welcomed.

Hi Hendrik

all depends what you want to call running costs.
Insuarance will cost you in the region of R.4000-00 per month.
Fuel will cost you about R.150 per hour , one up , and about R.220 per hour , two up.
You will have hanger fees of approx. R.600 per month. and club fees , plus whatever goes with that.
Your Gyro will need a service every 100hrs , which should not cost more than R.3000-00

I think if you add all this up , and you work on flying 10 hours per month , your hourly cost should be around R.800 to R. 900 per hour.

If you dont have inssuarance the cost will be a lot less.

Hope this will help you make up your mind.(Nothing flies like a gyro)

Hi Hendrik

Buying a gyro is much like getting married.
There is no financial justification !!!!!

You want one, 'cause you want one.

Thanks Swannie and Jaco

Yes, the insurance is something to consider, why is it that a Jab 430 cost R1300/month and a Gyro R3000-4000? :?

The next question I suppose is where to find a good secondhand Gyro? Will I find a Ela or Magni for +/-R300K?

Cheers

Have a look at AIRCRAFT FORSALE section, there is a good Magni M16 for good price.

Hendrik

When a Gyro rolls over (this could happen when rotor flap occurs,if you dont catch it in time) , the cost to repair could be in the region of R.300 000.00
and the ins. companys know about this.
On your second question, closer to 400 k , you might get one.

Cheers

R4 000 per month for insurance?..................are you guys serious??

I pay 2.8% on my helicopters, in other words R28 000 per year per R1m insured.

So tell me again that gyros are safer than helicopters,....................... not according to the insurance companies by the looks of it. :?

Whirly.

Insurance for gyros work out to approx. 10% of replacement costs per year.

Gyros are much like motorbikes. There is a small chance of a serious accident, that will destroy the gyro. It's the falling over part that happens - unfortunately - too often, that costs just as much as a more serious accident, and that is what has the insurance companies up in arms.

Friend of mine dropped his BMW GS1200 last week, not crashed, dropped at 20 km/h. He picked it up and rode it home. Quote to repair R 70 000.

That is why I pay for my bike - which is half the price of my car - the same insurance.
