Dear fellow Gyronauts

We are excited to have you visit us and are looking forward to it!

In the interest of making it easier for you, making it an enjoyable experience and keeping our reputations as responsible aviators in tact, herewith an informal heads-up with regard to flying into Stellenbosch and/or through the Cape Town CTR should you wish to do so while visiting us in the fairest Cape.

STELLENBOSCH – FASH 119.3

Joining Procedures and General Rules
• Aircraft shall join the circuit at 1800 ft altitude and shall remain clear of the Cape Town CTR and TMA unless under
Cape Town Control.
• Standard left-hand circuits at 1300 ft altitude will be flown for both runways at all times.
• Aircraft will observe the traffic pattern / wind direction overhead the Aiport and then descend on the "dead side" so as to join the circuit on a crosswind position at 1300 ft altitude.
• The frequency in the ATA is 119.3 MHz.
No aircraft may be parked within the refuelling area in such a way as to impair the access to the fuel bay or access to the hangers in the area. Aircraft parked for refuelling may never be left unattended, and only the PIC will be allowed in the refuelling area.
REFER TO AIP FASH AD 2.1 FOR AERODROME DATA

NOISE ABATEMENT

In order to minimise the noise problem at Stellenbosch the Instructors and Safety Officers have drawn up the following ‘Noise Abatement Procedures’. As a member or visitor operating out of Stellenbosch you are requested to comply with these procedures and in this way consider the local residents while still enjoying your flying.
• After take-off reduce power to climb power as soon as it is safe to do so.
• After departing runway 19 remain right of the extended centre line (heading 195° to 200°) to avoid noise sensitive areas.
• After departure runway 19 climb ahead to at lease 1000 ft, on QNH, before turning left crosswind.
• Avoid early turn outs after take-off or on a go-around.
• No low level circuits are to be flown at any time.
• When flying in the circuit or departing runway 19 to the north, pilots flying aircraft equipped with a constant speed unit are requested to reduce pitch so that the engine revs remain below 2 500 rpm (± 2 300 rpm recommended) until clear of the circuit.
• Pilots are requested not to overfly the towns of Stellenbosch, Strand and Somerset West below an altitude of 2000 ft.
• When possible, especially early morning departures, use runway 01 for take-off.
• Avoid circuit training before 08h00 in the morning.
• Avoid circuit training on Sundays
• Avoid flying after 18h00 on Sundays
• Try and avoid departures before 09h00 on a Sunday.
• Tuesday nights have been allocated for night circuit training.

CAPE TOWN – FACT 118.1

There will potentially be many Gyro’s in the air and in order to accomodate the increased traffic in the FACT CTR for those of us wishing to go on a peninsula flight through the FACT CTR, please follow the procedure below as agreed with Air Traffic Control.

Clockwise circular routing is advised. From FASH (119.3) to the CTR boundary at Firgrove, (118.1) then East to West coastwise to Muizenberg ( TIBA all the way to Ysterplaat is 125.8 ) and then returning coastwise Via Hout Bay, Llundudno, Twelve Apostles, Camps Bay, Clifton, Greenpoint, the City Bowl (V&A Waterfront) through FAYP (125.6 at the Container Depot – 125.8 at Rietvlei Dam northwards to Big Bay or Melkbos. This stretch is ideal if you want to do some low-level flying remembering not to be a nuisance to people or animals. Then Inland over Morningstar, (At railway line before Morningstar 124.8 climbing to 1 800’ overhead) then via Fisantekraal (131.1 also 1800’ overhead) routing East of the Botleray Hills on 124.8 once out of FAFK.

While single flights are acceptable (provided you are Mode C transponder equipped), formations of up to 5 Gyro’s at a time will be preferable and be welcomed. The leader must be transponder equiped and only he will sqwuak and talk to ATC. Please maintain at least 10 minutes seperation between formations. Please call ATC Briefing on 021 937 1116 at least 30 minutes before departure from FASH with the leaders call sign and number of gyro’s in the formation requesting coastal transit from Macassar Beach to Muizenberg @ 500’ or below.

Please note that the Simonstown Naval Base (FAR39) has a 1 500’ restriction and the Cape of Good hope Nature Reserve towards Cape Point has a 2 000’ restriction. Not too many safe landing areas around Cape Point in the event of a problem so we would recommend rather crossing over the peninsula from Fish Hoek to Kommetjie, then northwards along long beach – avoiding horses that may be on the beach if you do go low-level, going over the neck between Noordhoek and Hout Bay behind Chapmans Peak and then over to Llundudno rather than following the coastline where an engine out will be a problem. From Llundudno there are lay-byes and beaches that should make for a safe landing in the event of an emergency. Remember - The water is cold and it is estimated that hypothermia will set in within 8 minutes if the Great Whites don’t get you first ;-)

It will be a flight never to be forgotten so please go ahead, team up with a local if you like and GO FLY !!

Viva Gyro’s

Weet nie of dit hier gaan werk nie maar ek sal probeer....
Peninsula route.JPG
1 hour & 22 minutes @ 75mph. Heaven!

There will be adequate briefings, either on Friday night or Saturday for anyone that wants to fly the route and we will be more than happy to accompany any of the out-of-town pilots around the area if they are unsure.

Also remember that the ATC's etc are here to assist us and to take care of our safety, not to play policemen or try to humiliate and intimidate us. This is friendly country!

Len
