Eish...
This is the sort of thing you see James Bond drop out the bottom of a Boeing in, and come down in front of the evil-doers lair!

What you are looking at is the Focke Wulf type gyro used by the Germans during WW2 and was towed by a submarine as a lookout. It had the capability of jetisoning the blades in the event that they were spotted by enemy aircraft of shipping.
It was not really a major success as it was brought in toward the end of the war when a rudimentary type of radar was already in place.
In an emergency, the aircraft was simply cut loose from the sub, leaving the pilot to his own devices in the North Sea. The tow line also acted as a telephone system between sub and gyro.
The beauty about this aircraft is that it could be fitted into the sub as a knocked down version and reassembled again on deck in a very short space of time.
Bensen also developed a 2 seat glider version (which I have actually flown right here in the RSA) and what an experience. It does however have the glide ratio of a block of flats!
