The person who says it can't be done should not interrupt the person doing it.

Loeriesfontein
It was brisk and cool morning. There was a westerly wind and it was evident that mist and clouds will catch up
if we don’t get moving soon.Boet was late, something about a flat tyre. Now we even started getting flats on the cars. When
he eventually turned up we first had to go back to his workshop to swap a wheel. When we arrived back at the airfield it was a
quick refuel and preflight. Johan lent me his jacket for now I had to fly with an open cockpit, not a nice prospect. I did not have
the Brandvlei coordinates on my GPS but that didn’t worry me too much since it was a short leg and we fly in a group. It just
so happened that someone with a very ugly aircraft left all our important maps, some equipment and my book of coordinates
in the hanger in Douglas on a 44 gallon drum.
Before we left Boet said we must pass this hill in front of us on the left hand side. The right hand side was covered in cloud
so we took the slightly longer route. Don't get lost here,we will never find you. You will cut across the R357 and then as easy
as pie.
Without thinking, I took of first, engine purring like a kitten. As soon as I was airborne I cut back on power and set course
for Brandvlei. The Kriek and The radiator behind me. "I will cut back on power so you guys can overtake me". No problem,
aim for the edge of the mountain, what could be easier? After a while the Radiator came on the air:"You are off course, turn 90
degrees right. That sounded a bit hectic to me, but since I am now almost past this little hill and my superior sense of
direction concurred. Quite a while of radio silence followed. Next thing there a squeaky squeal in my headset. What on earth
could that be? Yes, there is definitely something tap tap tap tap tap hello testing …... hello Mnr.Strydom , can you
hear me? In a well modulated voice "READING YOU LOUD AND CLEAR GO AHEAD". Sir, sir may I please enquire about your
ground speed? Now why would the Kriek suddenly want to know about my grounspeed.? What's going on? MY
GROUNSPEED 65 MPH. Uh uh sir sir and your airspeed please? AIRSPEED 75MPH. I began to wonder....CAN
YOU GUYS SEE ME ,YOU SHOULD HAVE PASSED ME ALREADY. Long radio silence. Somehow I sensed that these guys
are trying to establish eye contact. Uh, no Sir we can't see you sir, and our wind vector is different to yours.
PLEASE DON’T PANIC,I PASSED A LITTLE CHURCH A WHILE AGO,HAVE YOU PASSED THE LITTLE CHURCH?
No Sir,didn’t see a church.I could detect a faint quiver in his voice. RIGHT,I NOW HAVE THE R357 IN SIGHT, WITH A VEHICLE
ON IT THAT COULD BE A SCHOOLBUS.VISABILITY IS BECOMING VERY POOR. But but sir, here where we are there are no clouds!
Sir. OK REMAIN CALM PLEASE, I WILL RETURN AND BACKTRACK TO FIND YOU. WATCH OUT FOR ME AS I'M
ABOUT TO TURN AROUND AND LOOK FOR YOU. Squeeky voice, thank you sir, really gratefull sir.
Now I am backtraking trying to fly by memory to the point where I cut in on the R357.The only landmark was that little church.
When I flew over it I could hardly believe what I saw. There were miles and miles of nothing and suddenly what looked like a
church. There wasn’t a soul in sight, not even a goat, cat, not any living thing. The building didn’t look derelict but it looks like
nobody's been there for a very long time. Maybe the farmers decided that praying for rain didn’t work. Anyway, as I was about to
turn in towards this church I noticed a T junction in the road ahead with a road sign on the corner. There was also a house and
a dam. It should be easy for them to get to this point, easier than the little church.
I AM GOING TO DO SOME LOW FLYING TO SEE WHAT THE ROAD SIGN SAYS. Uh uh please be careful sir. There were
also some electrical wires leading to the derelict farmhouse, not a soul in sight. Now it is important to note that this T junction
was situated on the foot of this same hill we passed on the left hand side, and the junction is at the lowest part. I have been
backtracking now for quite some time, and this junction should be easy for them to find. The sign said DROEE LAAGTE.O.K.
All I have to do now is to land here so these guys can catch up. KRIEK THIS IS CCN,I AM GOING TO LAND ON THE R357
AT THE T JUNCTION.I WILL GET OUT AND LISTEN OUT FOR YOU. Uh uh we really appreciate this sir.
I landed (uphill) unstrapped and got out. Where are these guys, I mean, they must cross the R357 sometime. As
quiet as a graveyard. I left my radio on and my headset close by in case they call me. At this stage I realized that they must
also have back tracked.Someone on the radio, uh uh sir, would you please be so kind to describe your area so we
can find it. OK,TO THE SOUTH OF THIS T JUNCTION IS WHAT APPEARS TO BE AN ESCOM POWER SUB
STATION WITH A LOT OF MASTS,SOME WITH LIGHTS ON. Uh uh looking sir.cannot find DROEE LEEGTE on the map
sir, can you spell it for me? Maybe I have the wrong map sir. Suddenly I heared the engines
The sound was becoming louder. They were flying toward the T junction. As soon as I saw them, I got back into the aircraft and strapped in.
I AM GOING TO DO AN UPHILL TAKE OFF,PLEASE CHECK FOR ME THAT THERE IS NO ON COMING TRAFFIC FROM
THE OTHER SIDE. Uh uh uh will immediately do that sir. I don’t know why I bothered because the only traffic on this dirt road
probably the school bus once or twice per day.
Sir sir can you hear me? GO AHEAD in a well articulated voice, sir the coast is clear sir. THANK YOU.
As I took of and rose over the hill, I saw Loeriesfontein in front of me. It was no shock to me as I realized that I had
backtracked a long way. The ESKOM power sub station was that of Loeriesfontein.
Evidently I was relieved to get these guys to a point where we were all on the same page
IT IS ALWAYS REWARDING TO GET THE LOST SHEEP BACK.
The graceful apologies of The KRIEK and the Radiator now concludes this chapter of Loeriesfontein.

(^^) Beauty ( or in this case the truth ) is in the eye of the beholder..or is it now the story teller.

The beauty of the whole story is all the laughs we had even while the whole thing played itself out because nobody paniced and at least Scary pilot followed the instructions from the Mothership to the letter.

Now I have to go and prepare for a serious NAV to Kitty tomorrow.....

Land by Ranch Hotel en boek in. Sien julle volgende jaar by Gariepdam.

HUB BAR,
Ja inderdaad, kan jy glo,20 jaar verby, jou seun is nou jou beste pel.Francois,Dit is presies my punt. I bought one of those little plastic toolboxes that fits under my seat.In it is the type of spanners that you use regularly and also a small shifting,a big one and a set of those small combination tool kits that you can buy from Builders warehouse, not the very cheap ones but something proper. There is enough space in that box to add things like a puncture repair kit or one of those gell type canisters.Do not underestimate the importance of a pump.Riaan (STRUIS)made a fitting with quick couplers that connects to his pneumatic pump,a very handy tool indeed. If you go on holiday with your car you should prepare adequetly, why not when you fly.The only things we didnt use this trip was the fire extinguisher and the first aid kit(i personally think its a waste of energy).A simple thing like a flat can ruin your trip, even kill you.If you didnt have your leatherman things might have been totally different. Also throw in short pieces of fuel pipe and clamps, and if possible a funnel that seperates water.Pratleys and cable ties is a must.Francois looking forward to meeting you at our next venue.Greetings

At least i bring my own chair with me.If you sit on any other Gyro wheel it goes flat. Also,if someone else stops your rotor for you it is called bonding, brake bonding
