12 Samples taken at Morningstar today - guaranteed no cross contamination!

There are only 4 gyro's left there that have not been sampled because I heard nothing back from the owners. 2 Xenons, 1 Ela and one M16. They have tomorrow left to do it or it will be too late.

THI, where is your machine? Sandkloof? Can we get access to it tomorrow afternoon? I am happy to fly up to your strip and take a sample if you can pop out and open up/warm up, or get me access and I will do it with pleasure. Let me know during the day and we will make a plan.

Had a pleasant visit today from Len and Ronnie. Despite the windsock being on honeymoon, Ronnie made a near perfect crosswind landing and takeoff!
Thanks for dropping in

Hi all

Thanks to everyone who took part in the oil sampling offer. I ended up with 21 samples in total, 18 x Rotax 914 engines, 2 x Rotax 912RST engines and one from a RAF Subaru. I have completed all the initial tests and most of you should have copies of your reports by no later than Wednesday. Some of you may be happy with what you see, while others may not be quite so. I certainly wont post information pertaining to any particular sample I received, however I will post a numerical average of the middle 50th percentile of the samples, that way you will be able to compare the results on your report to the figures I post here. If anyone wants to discuss there reports in any way please feel to PM your contact details and I am more than happy to give you a call.

Cheers
Darren

I agree, thanks Darren, good job mate.

Chatting to Darren at Kitty-Hawk he mentioned that it would be a good idea to build up a sampling history on your own machine by taking a sample every time prior to an oil change. This small effort and fee could save you thousands in the long run!

For those in the Cape, He has given me adequate sample kits and the cost per test will be R125.00
If you wish to make use of this please let me know and collect sample kits from me.

Rgds

Thanks Darren. This is a great initiative of yours. For us less engineering inclined, could you shed some light on how / what you check for and typically what the results mean or reveal?

Hi All

Ok guys/girls most of you should have received your reults today. Here is a list of the average reading from the middle ten samples taken, twenty samples from Rotax engines were tested and I have removed the 5 highest and 5 lowest results and then averaged the results the remainder to give you an idea of the average wear I saw. Guys dont panic if your indervidual results are higher than the average, these figures are purely representative and do not take into consideration time on oil, type of fuel used. types of flying conditions encoutered, load etc etc etc.

All results are in PPM

Al (Aluminium) - 5ppm
Cr (Chrome) - 1ppm
Iron (Fe) - 42ppm
Copper (Cu) - 12ppm
Tin (Sn) - 1ppm
Silicon (Si) - 14ppm
Sodium (Na) - 7ppm
Potassium (K) - 5ppm

I appologise for missing Nickel (Ni), I will update it tomorrow

If anyone needs any other info please let me know and I can call you to discuss.

Cheers
Darren
