Aviators Paradise

Postby Arnulf » Sun Mar 18, 2007 8:41 am

Hi,

Unicorn and myself wanted to fly to Aviators Paradise early this mornig. Got up dutifully at four this morning and checked the weather. The Irene weather balloon at 02H00 local gave the winds at 5300' southerly, 18 kts, and at 5900' 25 kts. I decided to call off the flight, and climb back into bed. Besides battling a serious headwind on the way back, my main concern was the potential of rotors over the Magalies Berg.

Now to the A P experts: How does a southerly wind affect A P? Would it be safe to cross the Magalies in these conditions at 7500'?

Regards,
Arnulf

Better come fly more south of JHB, not a breath of wind here this morning.
Flying below power lines on DS650X
And above in nothing

Was beeeg wind at Harties whole day. I have crossed it (in blik) at low level with 25kt southrly. Was        . 7500 should be fine. (I was just hopping over the ridge for fuel at Brits and should possibly have gone higher than I did)...

Was beeeg wind at Harties whole day.
I logged 3 hours between 6am and 9am - Was great, no wind - Must have picked up later.

Southerly wind at AP is a no-no - Ask HENK, he will tell you all about it

Yip, I too fear the ridge in windy conditions - I have crossed at 8600ft before - Long story

I was with Big D on one occassion at that alt...I spoke with a CAA rep who does radio licenses he reckons in the interests of your safety - nothing wrong with climbing into TMA to cross over. BUT he also showed me that the biggies' route going to FAJS come over the ridge there too  It's the PINEDENE corridor equiv.

Yip agreed, just be aware that you are in the TMA and possibly consider telling them that you need to pop into their space for a second or 2. Meeting a jet or TP or even just the jet stream will ruin your day...

PS
I have never done it in a trike, but usually 7500 is plenty...

Good idea, I actually don't even have their frequency? as I don't plan on landing there, too much traffic
