Airstrip alongside R26

Postby Propart » Mon Nov 06, 2006 5:35 pm

Recently on a business trip to South Africa I passed
an airstrip along side the R26 quite near Reitz. It has an
intresting sloping runway. Can anyone throw any light
on who owns it and its identity.

Thanks for your response RV4ker.

I dont think it is Reitz airfield as its about a mile east of the R26 according to google earth.

This strip was directly adjacent to the R26. It was either at the junction of the R57 at Reitz, just around the corner from Reitz airfield or it was at the junction of the R34 at Tweeling further north.

I once saw cropsprayers operating from there. Is it not perhaps a "cropsprayer base"?

Check with John Miller at SA Flyer. They were involved in the Reitz Meilie festival. He went down there and did a splash on the local flying community. IIRC he landed there. I also think there is a largish crop spraying operation there, think it might be linked to Orsmond Aviation in Bethlehem.

So flat infact that whoever made that field proberbly had to look around for quite a while to find a slope to put it on

I think that's one of the newly decommissioned private strips, now serving as a fire breaker.
