Field for RC Pilots
Field for RC Pilots
Hi Guys
I know this may be an odd request but we are battling to find a field.
We are a group of 4 guys looking for a location in which we can fly our Radio Controlled Aircraft and helicopters on a Saturday afternoon.
We are preferably looking for a asphalt strip of at least 150m in length.
We are prepared to pay rental if anyone has a private airstrip that might see little traffic over the weekends.
Full size aircraft would obviously have full right of way. and we would be prepared to get a radio to monitor air traffic if necessary.
Anyone got any suggestions?
Cheers
Stuart

Hi Karl
Thanks for the quick reply. We come from the western side of JHB mainly, but 1 of us is from the East. We are prepared to go anywhere in JHB basically.
Where are you based? CPT? know of any locations in the JHB area?
Cheers

Try Mauler (Chris) on Avcom. He owns VANS near Krugersdorp. I think he has/had RC connections and it has a full tar strip. Last time I check it was quiet all the time, but he is starting to develop it....
There are a couple options close to Harties as well, but they will require maintenance and the terrain is not great for forced lobs.... so not ideal as I assume if you need ashpalt these are beeg bucks toys....
PS
Tedderfield near Southgate has old disused strip to the south of the now new strip which may also be an option. used to be owned by John Sayers, but I think there was also a bank involved? Maybe one of the tedderfield guys (maybe Manfred of Raptor fame) can confirm?

Thanks for the help
ill give those a go. I used to fly at VANS(chris's strip). But he apparently wants to build a flying estate there. So its a no go unfortunately.
Ya we need the tar strip because some of the aircraft we want to fly are turbines and they need the smooth tar and at least 150m to take off in. Cant use grass as the grass tends to get sucked into the turbine causing foreign object damage which is slightly expensive to say the least.
Those others near southgate etc sound good. Any idea where could i contact the owners?

Re: Field for RC Pilots
Hello Mate,
There is a very nice RC strip, just north of JHB (past Dainfern) - I have no idea what its called but you can access it by driving to the Daytona motocross / enduro track. It has a nice tar runway. (not sure of length) and a great little clubhouse. Have seen it from the air a few times and it looks lekker...
essentially pass fourways on the dainfern road... drive north until you pass riversands chicken pies... just a little further up the road on the left is an entrance to daytona mx park.... go in there and follow your nose til you see the airfield on the right
Good luck

Re: Field for RC Pilots
Its a RC strip - very active. I often ride my MX bike out that way and see the planes flying overhead... looks like fun.... although if memory serves in retrospect I do think that the odd microlighter has done the odd touch and go there, but im probably wrong ha ha ha ha
NO - its defnitely a RC strip -

Re: Field for RC Pilots
i think that, should there be any incident, unless it is a Samaa registered model aircraft field, yo may be in a touch of trouble.
You can try barnstormers in Kempton Park. There is also a nice one in the south of JHB near panorama. I have seen them fly turbines from there.

Re: Field for RC Pilots
ive heard via the grapevine that barnstormers has a problem with alcohol, and rmac(in the south) runways are a bit short.
Its ok though. chris at VANS place is very nice. was there this weekend.

Re: Field for RC Pilots
Rmac .... Flew my first pattern competition there way back in 1992.
I can tell you where not to go .....
Alberton Radio flyers .... Runway too short.
Modderfontein maodel aircraft club .... Runway too short.
Vereneging model aircraft club ..... Long runway, but grass. (used to fly my large scale from there, because of the runway length)
Benoni radio flyers ...... Grass
You could try North eastern radio flyers. (Suthern side of on allandale road)
They have a long tar runway.
