Dragons of the Downwind Turn

As requested...
It would be nice if it could be a sticky, hopefully it will get a lot of views and debate.
I strongly believe that there is a lack of understanding about low level downwind turns out there amongst many low time and even some high time VFR pilots and my hope is that accidents can be avoided.

Thanks RV4ker

It appears to me that this is what could have happened to Junkie. He took off in a southerly direction into a strong SW (i.e. coming at say 45deg from the right), lots of trees around the airfield shielding the wind. Performed a low level (200ft AGL ) left turn, resulting in a sudden very strong tailwind. Within 2 seconds left wing drops, he tries to correct, insipient spin and impacts the threshold of the runway at a very high speed and angle. :cry: :cry:

Watch these relevant topic's on Avcom. Try never to turn downwind after take of. If you cant, and the the Wind is strong, dont fly !!!!
