Is it possible to get instrument rating on fixed wing microlight ?
The reason I am asking this question is that I am going to work away
from home and am concidering to buy a fixed wing and then
fly in and out, but then we know the weather will probably
not co-operate 90% of the time.

Presently IF ATF on NTCA (of which 3 axis Micro is one) is "not possible". If you have a IF PPL rating CAA will consider application. Aerie must have all the instruments as required by part 91..04.5 & 91.04.6. Strange that it based on pilot rather than plane, but that how it is. I confirmed this first hand with the authorities yesterday at CAA in person.
That said - I know of 2 NTCA aeries that have an IF ATF. Both are high performance types. (RV7A with full glass panel incl. Garmin 430's and Lancair IV with Chelton ($100K system) glass). All instruments must be yellow tagged and must be maintained by AMO.
No legislation like this exists so while in theory it is possible they are making it up as they go along which usually means a long process.
PS
I think that some of the Jabi's are being used for IF training in VFR conditions. The Jabi factory is CAA approved and if the instruments are maintained there should not be a problem, but flying into serious clag in Jabi may not be ideal? They have expressly said that they will not allow any IF training (assume that actual IF conditions) on NTCA...
