Aircraft in training category

Postby C205 » Thu May 31, 2007 8:08 am

Ok, so as some microlighters have read under the Aircraft for Sale column, I will soon be flying again with a private set of wings. I will be finishing/doing my MPL on the Quicksilver at a flying school. I have heard that the aircraft should be registered in the training category for this, besides being put on the flying school's books.
How does one register an aircraft in the training category or is this done by the flying school only? There's no provision for such a category on the registration form. Also the aircraft will not be registered in my name. Could this be a problem?
Anyone gone this way before?

I wanted to go this route but the first problem was the AP inspection form (annual inspection) the AP needs to tick that the plane will be used for owner training. This was not done so abandoned the idea.

Hi C205, great to see you resuming the MPL. I wanted to complete on my plane and was told it's a simple process

1. Firstly there must be an instructor rated on your specific manufacturer
2. Register AC type on the schools books / license and the specific AC - done by the school and at a cost

Even tho it's so simple I was asked but why must they go through the effort of being my type certified when there are so few in the country so it wasn't worthwhile for them. Timewise or moneywise. They recommended I finish on their planes and then do a conversion, was also advised if conversion took more than an hour then go elsewhere as I was being ripped off. The idea of the conversion is to see if you know how do fly that specific one and can do all the basics, stall, land etc.

Good luck!

I was un  der the impression that owner training it did not need to be any different. I have done convex onto my aeries with no funnies like that and CAA accepted them? :?: :?: :?: :?:

Thanks all for your replies, sounds fairly simple then. Will leave it up to my flying school to do the paperwork.

RV4ker its a different matter to do a simple conversion when you already have an MPL. A friend of mine, a fixed wing CPL, also just needs a simple conversion to fly the Quicksilver. However to do your MPL on your own aerie is something else altogether.
Our C206 at the skydiving club has done many a pilot's conversion onto type but is not a training aircraft - you can't do ab initia training in it.

Okay, I see the difference. Was under impression you had MPL.

PS
I still think that if it not being used as a training aerie (ie any student), but only to train owner it does not have to be on the shool license. I know a guy who bought a C210 and learn't on it from scratch at his farm. No school, no school license etc. Instructor lived there for a couple weeks and did training for him. Was some time back though, so may have changed?

The law's changed then. The aerie has to be on a flying school's licence and instructors must operate under the licence of a flying school. CAA holds regular inspections of these facilities and each flying institution's books to make sure they conform to standards.

Hi, the correct procedure is as follows:
1. AP to check out plane
2. New authority to fly issued that states, owner trainer.
No need to put on school books but CAA will want to know where the training will be done
3. The ATF is only valid for 50 hr's
Hope it helps.
